Novolin insulin has multiple subtypes, R which lasts no more than 6 hours or so, N which certainly can last more than12 hours, etc.  It is not unusual early in the course of type 1 diabetes for there to be dysregulation of remaining endogenous insulin which can produce subsequent lows.  C-peptide measurement is usually not clinically useful as the differentiation between type 1 and type 2 is more of a clinical typology, with many specific measurements showing overlap.
