Question:
Could my leg edema be related to my blood sugars? March 14, 2010
Background:
Show Background Information
I have been a type 1 diabetic for 13 years and have been lucky enough to not have any complications thus far relating to my diabetes. I will admit my recent graduation and career have been super stressful and has taken its toll on how well I take care of myself. Over the past four months, i’ve noticed that around the time I get my period, i retain a large amount of water ( anywhere from 10-15 lbs). My leg swells to the point where it is uncomfortable to sit, stand or even wear my shoes. I’ve noticed lately that i’ve had trouble breathing ( which may be attributable to stress since it seems to go away). My dr has done a full workup of my blood and does not see any problems. He has just told me to cut back on salty food ( i do not eat alot of salty food to begin with) and “watch it”. its a cycle i’ve seen repeatedly over multiple months so i’m curious to know if anyone has any thoughts on what could cause this- could it be related to my blood sugars? if this is the case why does it only happen during “that” time of the month?

Question:
How do you treat a membrane on the retina? December 22, 2009
Background:
Show Background Information
I was diagnosed in 1971 with Type 1 in 1984-85, I had multiple laser surgery to treat retinopathy. In 2005 I noticed changes in vision; my retina specialist calls it a membrane or scar tissue on the retina, mostly in the right eye.
There is apparently a way to remove this, but at this point no one wants to do it; I get the impression that it is a somewhat risky surgery, and that it is best to wait until my vision is considerably worse. What can you tell me about the condition, the surgery and the risks?
FYI, I had a kidney/pancreas transplant in 2005 that was successful and I have normal blood sugars now with no need for insulin.

The inheritance of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes is complex, but with almost all inherited illnesses there are many more persons with the risk genes than those who actually develop the disease — so one or both of your parents may have certain traits which were passed to you and your brothers. If we understood the environmental factors which caused those risk genes to develop into the disease, we would have very important tools for use in preventing and treating it, which is why research is so important.
