Question:
Could my leg edema be related to my blood sugars? March 14, 2010

I have been a type 1 diabetic for 13 years and have been lucky enough to not have any complications thus far relating to my diabetes. I will admit my recent graduation and career have been super stressful and has taken its toll on how well I take care of myself. Over the past four months, i’ve noticed that around the time I get my period, i retain a large amount of water ( anywhere from 10-15 lbs). My leg swells to the point where it is uncomfortable to sit, stand or even wear my shoes. I’ve noticed lately that i’ve had trouble breathing ( which may be attributable to stress since it seems to go away). My dr has done a full workup of my blood and does not see any problems. He has just told me to cut back on salty food ( i do not eat alot of salty food to begin with) and “watch it”. its a cycle i’ve seen repeatedly over multiple months so i’m curious to know if anyone has any thoughts on what could cause this- could it be related to my blood sugars? if this is the case why does it only happen during “that” time of the month?

There are many conditions that can lead to edema and these should be fully worked up by your physician. These conditions can depend on your age, how much time you spend on your feet, other medical conditions you may have, medications you may take, and a plethora of other factors, including whether this swelling is in one leg or both. However, fluid retention prior to menses can certainly occur, and the reasons for this are very poorly understood. There does not seem to be any direct connection between high blood sugars and edema of the legs.
