The Halloween Yo-Yo

The sports world is quite snobby.  If you ask players and fans of various sports if Golf is one, you would have quite a debate.  Not with Football, Baseball, Basketball or even Soccer, but Golf seems to rile everyone up.  Well, since I am one to always stir the pot, I am declaring that Yo-Yo(ing) is a sport!

The level of skill, tricks and hand-eye coordination involved, plus the fact that there are actual competitions qualify the Yo-Yo as a sport and those that use it as athletes.  They have mastered the art of Sleeping the Yo-Yo (Keeping a yo-yo spinning while remaining at the end of its uncoiled string is known as sleeping).  Some have learned to Loop the Yo-Yo (Looping is a yo-yo technique which emphasizes keeping the body of the yo-yo in constant motion, without sleeping). Others are wizards of Off-String and Freehand (In the off-string technique, the yo-yo’s string is not tied directly to the yo-yo’s axle, and the yo-yo is usually launched into the air by performing a “forward pass” to be caught again on the string. In freehand tricks, the yo-yo’s string is not tied to the player’s hand, instead ending in a counterweight. The counterweight is then thrown from hand to hand and used as an additional element in the trick).

As a Diabetic, I always feel like a Yo-Yo, especially this past weekend.  Not only was it Halloween, but it was also my son Sam’s 7th Birthday.  Yes, a Halloween baby!  We do Halloween right in my house.  We are decorated to the max!  We have all the neighbors over for Pizza, Beer, Cake, and of course CANDY!  For some reason, this year I was all over the place.

I woke up with my blood sugar at 225.  The previous evening it was 85 when I went to bed.  After eating just eggs and downing a cup of coffee for breakfast, I ballooned to 330.  We then took Sam to his soccer game at 10:00am.  After the game I was back to 165.

We then took five kids to the Flyers vs. Hurricanes Hockey game.  It was pouring rain outside and traffic was awful.  By 1:00pm when we arrived at the arena I was back to 250.  When we returned home at 4:30pm, I was 62.  At Dinner – 112, Trick or Treating – 160, Returning Home – 111, Bed – 85.  The next morning I was 115 and was fine the entire day.

I felt like a yo-yo all day.  Up, down, left, right, spin fast, spin slow, my head was hurting when the day was over.  After reading about the sport, I just wanted to take my body and do the “Sleep” maneuver.  We all have yo-yo type days, we are the Duncan Diabetics.
