I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes on a cold Saturday morning in college — particularly unfortunate timing because it meant that there were no diabetes educators on duty in the student health center where I was staying. In fact, none of the nurses seemed to know much about diabetes at all — my first dinner with diabetes came with a huge plate of rice. It wasn’t until Monday that I actually got to speak to someone about what diabetes was and how it was going to affect my life.

I grew up watching Paul Bosh Wrestling in Houston, Texas. I watched Dr. Death Steve Williams, The Rock N Roll Express, Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndorf, Ted Dibiase, Kamala The Ugandan Giant, The Von Erichs and of course Hacksaw Jim Duggan. This was all before they went rogue and joined the WWF (now called WWE). My friends and I tried to emulate these characters before class each day. We would fly off the turnbuckle (a desk) and power drive into one of our classmates. We had our own wrestling names; Scott “The Gorgeous One”...

You might be surprised at one of the most important tools in my diabetes management. It’s not the medicine, or exercise, or even the 10-15 glasses of water I drink daily. It’s saying “I have diabetes” out loud.
When I started telling people I had diabetes, I began to come to terms with it. Having to say it out loud brought on the realization of how serious diabetes is, and I began to accept that the way I’d been living for years was contributing to poor quality of life, even while I was professing...
