{"id":10221,"date":"2010-09-09T15:51:11","date_gmt":"2010-09-09T19:51:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=10221"},"modified":"2015-12-27T15:45:13","modified_gmt":"2015-12-27T20:45:13","slug":"training-again-this-time-in-paleo-style","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=10221","title":{"rendered":"Training Again (This Time Paleo Style)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This week I kicked off my training for the season. I\u2019ve decided to run the <a href=\"..\/..\/..\/..\/..\/..\/michael\/blogs\/exercise-blogs\/my-second-marathon\/4921\/\">Tiberias<\/a> marathon again in January and I\u2019ve also signed up for a few other races, including a 30K off road race.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">My first race of this season is a 10K race this weekend.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I\u2019ve actually participated in very few 10K races. My first race ever, three years ago, was a 10K (the same race I\u2019m running this weekend). I ran it in 48 or 49 minutes. The other three 10K\u2019s I\u2019ve participated in were Nike\u2019s Human Race Night Runs \u00a0in Tel Aviv which were all crowded and slow (a little under 50 minutes), \u00a0but a lot of fun.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This race is kind of a jump start for my training program. I\u2018ve been running relatively short distances all summer (5-8 miles) trying to stay in decent shape while letting my body rest after months of marathon training. I\u2019m not entirely sure what kind of shape I\u2019m in and this race will be an indicator. I\u2019m not going to train for it but I do hope to break my personal record which is from the same race.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I\u2019m happy to say that I feel like I\u2019m better prepared going in to this season\u2019s training. I spent much of the summer trying to learn more about controlling my BS while I run. I think I learned a lot but still have a lot more to learn. One of the things I\u2019ve learned is to run with a glucometer, which has saved me on a few runs.\u00a0 (I know&#8230; it should have been the most obvious thing to do&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another thing I tried to figure out this summer is why my heart rate jumps on some runs as it did during the <a href=\"..\/..\/..\/..\/..\/..\/michael\/blogs\/exercise-blogs\/rotterdam-marathon-the-diabetic-version\/6870\/\">Rotterdam marathon<\/a>. When I started <a href=\"..\/..\/..\/..\/..\/..\/michael\/blogs\/exercise-blogs\/the-heart-rate-experiment-part-1\/7662\/\">experimenting<\/a> and trying to understand the heart rate issues, I was sure a drop in BS during the run caused the problems.\u00a0 But it seems that isn\u2019t the case.\u00a0 So I still don\u2019t know why it happens when it does, but I think it has to do with highs and lows during the hours before the run (usually when I sleep).\u00a0 Another interesting point is that since going on the Paleo Diet I\u2019ve had very few HR incidents (the one I remember was after a nighttime hypo).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Paleo Diet has done great things for my BS control and has also helped me <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/michael\/blogs\/food-nutrition-blogs\/losing-weight-%E2%80%93-caveman-style\/9178\/\">lose weight<\/a> (I\u2019m down to 165 lb, 4 less than I was for the <a href=\"..\/..\/..\/..\/..\/..\/michael\/blogs\/exercise-blogs\/rotterdam-marathon-the-diabetic-version\/6870\/\">Rotterdam marathon<\/a>). Following the Paleo Diet for Athletes, I\u2019ve already introduced some carbohydrate to my diet, which has increased my insulin dose but has given me the energy I need to run. But now, going in to real marathon training with 30+ mile weeks, I will need to increase my carb intake some more, which I fear may cause more highs and more lows.
