{"id":10922,"date":"2010-10-06T07:03:34","date_gmt":"2010-10-06T11:03:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=10922"},"modified":"2015-12-27T15:47:26","modified_gmt":"2015-12-27T20:47:26","slug":"a-diabetes-meme-and-asweetlife-turns-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=10922","title":{"rendered":"A Diabetes Meme and ASweetLife Turns One"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/jess.stop2_.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10946 lazyload\" style=\"margin: 4px;\" title=\"jess.stop2\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/jess.stop2_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"322\" \/><\/a>This month ASweetLife celebrates its one-year anniversary.\u00a0 It has been wonderful to become part of the online diabetes community, and I am extremely grateful to all of ASweetLife&#8217;s bloggers, contributors, and readers.\u00a0 A huge thanks to all of you! \u00a0 I was trying to think of a good way to mark the anniversary, and after reading (and enjoying) a number of diabetes memes, like <a href=\"http:\/\/sixuntilme.com\/blog2\/2010\/09\/a_diabetes_meme.html\" target=\"_blank\">Kerri&#8217;s<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/sstrumello.blogspot.com\/2010\/09\/diabetes-meme.html\" target=\"_blank\">Scott S&#8217;s<\/a> and most recently,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.diabetesmine.com\/2010\/10\/diabetes-meme-anything-youd-like-to-know.html\" target=\"_blank\"> Amy&#8217;s,<\/a> I decided this might be a good way.\u00a0 So here you have it, my diabetes meme.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What type of diabetes do you have?<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/a-sweet-life-staff\/featured\/what-is-lada\/5999\/\" target=\"_blank\">LADA<\/a> &#8211; technically.\u00a0 But I always say type 1 because no one knows what LADA is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When were you diagnosed?<\/strong><br \/>\nDecember 2008, years after being undiagnosed\/misdiagnosed<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s your current blood sugar?<\/strong><br \/>\n122<\/p>\n<p><strong>What kind of meter do you use?<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/a-sweet-life-staff\/tips\/blood-sugar-control-tips\/rule-of-finger\/10856\/\" target=\"_blank\">Freestyle Freedom Lite<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>How many times a day do you test your blood sugar?<\/strong><br \/>\nIt varies. \u00a0If I eat what I know, then 4 or 5 times a day.\u00a0 If I eat something different, 8 or more<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s a \u201chigh\u201d number for you?<\/strong><br \/>\nI aim to be under 140 after meals.\u00a0 140-160 frustrates me.\u00a0 Over 160 makes me panic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you consider \u201clow\u201d?<\/strong><br \/>\nI start to feel shaky in the 70s<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s your favorite low blood sugar reaction treater?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dried fruit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Describe your dream endo:<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/contributors\/dr-mariela-glandt\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Mariela Glandt<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s your biggest diabetes achievement?<\/strong><br \/>\nActually getting the correct diagnosis was a pretty big achievement.\u00a0 Also, my last pregnancy, as well as maintaining a good marriage between two people with diabetes- that is, not letting diabetes rule the house.\u00a0 I also feel really good about ASweetLife\u00a0 and some of my other diabetes writing like <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/jessica-apple\/featured\/the-search-for-a-sweet-solution\/1940\/\" target=\"_blank\">this,<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/a-sweet-life-staff\/featured\/genetic-testing-to-predict-diabetes-yes-or-no\/9367\/\" target=\"_blank\">this<\/a> where I shared some musings on whether or not to test my sons for diabetes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s your biggest diabetes-related fear?<\/strong><br \/>\nYes, I agree with the others&#8230; not waking up in the morning.\u00a0 And I&#8217;m terrified of complications.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who\u2019s on your support team?<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/author\/michael\/\" target=\"_blank\"> My husband<\/a>, over and over and over again.\u00a0 Also, my father, my brother,\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/contributors\/dr-mariela-glandt\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mariela Glandt<\/a>, and my fellow diabetes writers <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/author\/karmel\/\" target=\"_blank\">Karmel Allison<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/author\/catherine\/\" target=\"_blank\">Catherine Price<\/a>.\u00a0 But even with all of these amazing people &#8211; and others, too &#8211; oftentimes I feel very alone with diabetes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you think there will be a cure in your lifetime?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sadly, I don&#8217;t.\u00a0 I think prevention methods have more promise.\u00a0 I believe in <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/a-sweet-life-staff\/featured\/vitamin-d-why-governments-are-selling-it-short\/7122\/\" target=\"_blank\">vitamin D<\/a>.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What is a \u201ccure\u201d to you?<\/strong><br \/>\nBeta cells that are safe and sound.\u00a0 Sometimes I imagine them in little suits of armor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The most annoying thing people say to you about your diabetes is:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But you&#8217;re not overweight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the most common misconception about diabetes?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From people with diabetes themselves, that you<em> can <\/em>eat whatever you want, as long as you take your medication.<\/p>\n<p>From anyone else, that using insulin isn&#8217;t a big deal.\u00a0 Or that the only drawback to insulin is that you have to inject it.\u00a0 And of course&#8230;
