He\u2019s a little quirky, but a very good doctor.\u00a0 Although I \u00a0visit him only once every three months, \u00a0he seems to remember a lot about my health and seems to actually care.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The one thing that drives me crazy about my doctor, however, (and most doctors I\u2019ve seen since being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes) is the fact that he doesn\u2019t seem to strive for excellence as far as my diabetes management is concerned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">My approach is that my numbers should be the same as those of someone who doesn\u2019t have diabetes. I\u2019m far from getting there, \u00a0but I believe that should be the goal.\u00a0 Diet, exercise, medication, pump or injection should all be determined with that goal in mind.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Achieving the goal &#8211; having a normal HbA1c level (below 6%)\u2013 with very few lows or highs, will probably mean, at least as far as diabetes is concerned, a long and healthy life with very few complications.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">However, this &#8220;goal&#8221; does not seem to be the common approach of family doctors or diabetes specialists. Extreme sports and \u00a0very strict diets are usually considered crazy, if not unhealthy, by most of the doctors I\u2019ve met, my doctor included.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">So, I went to my doctor today to get new prescriptions and paper work for blood tests. While there I decided to ask him what he thought of the idea of me getting an insulin pump. His reaction was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/michael\/blogs\/food-nutrition-blogs\/the-caveman-diet-and-my-hba1c\/11627\/\">Why?\u00a0 Your HbA1c is under 7<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">I can understand why he didn\u2019t ask about my highs and lows, or about how the pump would affect my running or diet. \u00a0What I cannot understand is why \u201cless than 7\u201d is considered healthy when you have diabetes, but not if you don\u2019t. I understand why doctors need a minimal measure for people with diabetes to strive for but, if that measure isn\u2019t really normal, should they stop there?\u00a0 Shouldn\u2019t doctors say \u201cmaybe you can do better?\u201d Especially if they know their patient is the kind of patient that can drive himself to do better?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":129,"featured_media":53098,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_relevanssi_hide_post":"","_relevanssi_hide_content":"","_relevanssi_pin_for_all":"","_relevanssi_pin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_unpin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_include_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_exclude_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_no_append":"","_relevanssi_related_not_related":"","_relevanssi_related_posts":"","_relevanssi_noindex_reason":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[1501],"tags":[636],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v22.9 (Yoast SEO v22.9) -
