{"id":15557,"date":"2011-04-18T09:23:03","date_gmt":"2011-04-18T13:23:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=15557"},"modified":"2015-12-27T15:47:25","modified_gmt":"2015-12-27T20:47:25","slug":"let-my-diabetes-go-im-a-slave-to-blood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=15557","title":{"rendered":"Let My Diabetes Go (I&#8217;m a slave to blood)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Raise your hand if you&#8217;ve ever felt like a slave to diabetes.\u00a0 Say <em>me<\/em> if you&#8217;ve ever drawn a parallel between the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Passover_Seder\" target=\"_blank\">Passover Seder<\/a> ritual of dipping your finger into wine ten times while reciting the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plagues_of_Egypt\" target=\"_blank\">ten plagues<\/a>, and pricking your finger ten times to check your blood sugar while reciting various four letter words.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tonight Passover begins, and I&#8217;m not a big fan of Passover. The Seders of my childhood took place at my grandmother, <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/a-sweet-life-staff\/featured\/fear-of-food-a-hanukkah-diabetes-diagnosis\/3388\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bashy&#8217;s<\/a>, house.\u00a0 While I recall Bashy, who passed away two years ago at the age of 99, with great love and fondness, her Seders bring to mind only traumatic memories.\u00a0 The food, for example&#8230; I don&#8217;t know how she did it, but while Bashy&#8217;s gefilte fish, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Matzoh_balls\" target=\"_blank\">matzoh balls<\/a>, chopped liver, and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charoset\" target=\"_blank\">charoset<\/a> varied from one another somewhat in flavor and texture, each dish looked the same- and as gray as a teenage boy&#8217;s soiled tube sock.\u00a0 And every year being served such food would cause us to add a few more questions to the famous <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_four_questions\" target=\"_blank\">four questions<\/a> of Passover like: Are these last year&#8217;s leftovers?\u00a0 Did Bashy use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wisegeek.com\/what-is-matzo-meal.htm\" target=\"_blank\">matzoh meal<\/a> or is this made from a ground and seasoned cardboard box?\u00a0 And then there was an older relative, always just drunk enough to push me and my little brother out of the way when we found the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Afikomen\" target=\"_blank\">Afikomen<\/a>, and claim it for himself.\u00a0 And the reading out loud (I hate reading out loud!) from the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hagaddah\" target=\"_blank\">Haggadah<\/a>, trying to pronounce words like<em><\/em> <em>pestilence<\/em>, while above mentioned drunk relative snickered.\u00a0 And on top of everything, \u00a0I had to endure all of this while wearing an uncomfortable skirt under which I always wore a pair of shorts so there was absolutely no chance anyone would see my underpants.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Holidays are stressful, even if you aren&#8217;t worried about someone seeing your underpants.\u00a0 Stress, like holiday food, can make your blood sugar go crazy.\u00a0 Lucky for me, I am already so stressed out, no holiday-induced stress will seem out of the ordinary to my body.\u00a0 Moreover, I (as you might have guessed) don&#8217;t like Passover food.\u00a0 So it will be very easy for me to pass up every single course of this long meal.\u00a0 My blood sugar levels should be fine.\u00a0 But despite the fact that I&#8217;m not expecting to struggle with diabetes tonight, I can&#8217;t resist this opportunity to say <em>Let my diabetes go<\/em>. \u00a0And since we&#8217;re talking slavery&#8230; say <em> me <\/em>if you remember Bryan Ferry&#8217;s 1985 song, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slave_To_Love\" target=\"_blank\">Slave to Love<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you&#8217;re having a Seder tonight and you happen to have diabetes,\u00a0 I suggest \u00a0you surprise your guests.\u00a0 Opt out of the traditional (same old, same old, same old rounds of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mSfrxV_Kcig\" target=\"_blank\">Dayenu<\/a>) and instead break out in a loud chorus of Slave to Blood (sung to the tune of Slave to Love).\u00a0 Now that I think about it, even if you don&#8217;t celebrate Passover, this may be a very good exercise for anyone living with diabetes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>No I can&#8217;t escape.\u00a0 I&#8217;m a slave to blood.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>[youtube]http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UH1CMCtV4to[\/youtube]<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Happy Passover!<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":53098,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_relevanssi_hide_post":"","_relevanssi_hide_content":"","_relevanssi_pin_for_all":"","_relevanssi_pin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_unpin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_include_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_exclude_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_no_append":"","_relevanssi_related_not_related":"","_relevanssi_related_posts":"","_relevanssi_noindex_reason":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[1501],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v22.9 (Yoast SEO v22.9) -
