{"id":15895,"date":"2011-05-02T08:17:42","date_gmt":"2011-05-02T12:17:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=15895"},"modified":"2015-12-27T15:44:25","modified_gmt":"2015-12-27T20:44:25","slug":"talking-to-myself-a-conversation-with-jessica-apple","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=15895","title":{"rendered":"Talking to Myself: A Conversation with Jessica Apple"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I confess: I&#8217;m doing something I swore I wouldn&#8217;t do.\u00a0 I&#8217;m eating carbs and not checking my blood sugar.\u00a0 But wait, before you judge and before you allow yourself to visualize me totally losing control and participating in a pie eating contest, or getting edible hair extensions made of Twizzlers, please give me the benefit of the doubt.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not going all out on carbs.\u00a0 Just a few bites here and there.\u00a0 But I know those bites have a big impact on my blood sugar.\u00a0 I know that if I checked, there is a good chance I&#8217;d see\u00a0 numbers like 180, maybe 200.\u00a0 And I know that if I saw those numbers on the glucometer, I would panic, and stop the snacking.\u00a0 But I haven&#8217;t been checking.\u00a0 Why not?\u00a0 Actually, this is a complex issue and since I&#8217;m confused, I will interview myself to try to find out what&#8217;s going on with me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><strong>JA: Why aren&#8217;t you checking your blood sugar?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15903\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15903\" style=\"width: 180px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/DropofBlood.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15903 lazyload\" title=\"DropofBlood\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/DropofBlood.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15903\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mike&#39;s Fingers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">JA: The blood.\u00a0 The blood is driving me crazy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>JA: Please explain.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">JA: (whining) I don&#8217;t want to prick my fingers or my forearm.\u00a0 I just don&#8217;t.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t want to see blood.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t want to think about blood.\u00a0 It upsets me, it grosses me out, and it makes me anxious.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>JA: Jess, baby, blood sugar checks are where it&#8217;s at in diabetes care.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t let a little drop of blood freak you out.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">JA: What if I get germs from an unclean lancet?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>JA: C&#8217;mon&#8230; most diabetics only change their lancets on the occasion of a total solar eclipse.\u00a0 You allow cats to sleep on your head.\u00a0 You have no right to worry about a little lancet bacteria.\u00a0 The question you should be asking now is, what&#8217;s up with the carbs? <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">JA: I don&#8217;t know.\u00a0 Ever since I started to make homemade granola for the kids, I&#8217;ve been craving cereal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>JA: So make low-carb granola with nut flour and use no sugar added almond milk.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">JA: (growls) \u00a0And what should I use to hold it together, Silly Putty?\u00a0 The granola will taste like that anyway.\u00a0 By the way, weren&#8217;t you shocked that your friend from Austria didn&#8217;t know what Silly Putty was?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>JA: We&#8217;re getting nowhere.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">JA: Oh, but the rest of the world is going places.\u00a0 Will and Kate are married.\u00a0 Bin Laden is dead.
