{"id":18276,"date":"2011-07-21T08:59:09","date_gmt":"2011-07-21T12:59:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=18276"},"modified":"2015-12-27T15:41:53","modified_gmt":"2015-12-27T20:41:53","slug":"by-the-sweat-of-my-fingertips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=18276","title":{"rendered":"By The Sweat of My Fingertips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Between refrigeration and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diabetesfrio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Frios<\/a>, it&#8217;s easy enough to keep insulin cool on hot summer days.\u00a0 Keeping ourselves cool, however, is not as easy.\u00a0 It&#8217;s so hot in Tel Aviv that we&#8217;re sweating even with the air conditioning on.\u00a0 Yesterday, after a 5:00 a.m. run, Mike spent thirty minutes standing in the bathroom trying to cool off before his shower. The sweat just wouldn&#8217;t stop.\u00a0 And my sweating is at its worst now, too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">My sweating condition,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyperhidrosiscumc.com\/hyperhidrosis.html\" target=\"_blank\"> palmar hyperhidrosis<\/a>, has nothing to do with diabetes or exercise.\u00a0 I often have sweaty palms as a result of an overactive sympathetic nervous system.\u00a0 Normally, it&#8217;s not such a big deal.\u00a0 I&#8217;m way past being embarrassed about it, and laugh at memories of melting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scantron.com\/forms\/\" target=\"_blank\">Scantron<\/a> test sheets in school so that they couldn&#8217;t be read.\u00a0 But now I&#8217;m faced daily with tests I can&#8217;t afford to screw up- blood sugar tests.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Testing-Blood-Sugar-Error.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-18291 lazyload\" title=\"Testing Blood Sugar - Error\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Testing-Blood-Sugar-Error.jpg\" alt=\"Testing Blood Sugar - Error\" width=\"186\" height=\"321\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Testing-Blood-Sugar-Error.jpg 232w, https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Testing-Blood-Sugar-Error-174x300.jpg 174w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 186px) 100vw, 186px\" \/><\/a>For days Mike and I have been talking about our frustrations with sweat and blood sugar testing.\u00a0 Sweat ruins diabetic test strips, or interferes with the accuracy of the reading.\u00a0 I have to pour my test strips out of the bottle because if I stick a sweaty finger into it, I risk ruining all the test strips.\u00a0 Drying my hands doesn&#8217;t help.\u00a0 The minute I start thinking about my fingertips being sweaty, I sweat even more.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">My solution is to use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abbottdiabetescare.com\/freestyle-freedom-lite-blood-glucose-monitoring-system.html\" target=\"_blank\">Abbott&#8217;s FreeStyle meter<\/a> which allows me to <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/a-sweet-life-staff\/tips\/blood-sugar-control-tips\/rule-of-finger\/10856\/\">test my blood sugar on my forearm<\/a>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a less accurate reading than a fingertip provides, but it&#8217;s the best I can do.\u00a0 When testing on the forearm, you need to rub the area before pricking to increase blood flow to the surface.\u00a0 Because I can&#8217;t use a wet palm to rub my arm, I use my other forearm to rub.\u00a0 This leaves me looking like some sort of crazed traffic controller.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mike&#8217;s situation is more complicated; it&#8217;s even dangerous.\u00a0 If he&#8217;s running with low (or high) blood sugar, he needs to know it!\u00a0 He absolutely must have an accurate reading.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been thinking about this and wondering, what do athletes with diabetes do when they need to check blood sugar levels mid-run, mid-ride, mid-game, etc?\u00a0 Does everyone have a CGM?\u00a0 Is a CGM reliable enough?\u00a0 In a recent blog <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/michael\/blogs\/exercise-blogs\/running-low\/17990\/\" target=\"_blank\">post<\/a>, Mike mentioned that he stopped running and wiped his finger on a wall to try to get rid of the sweat.\u00a0 Like me, he can&#8217;t stick his fingers into the test strip bottle or pour one out into his wet hand.\u00a0 This means he has to be in a place where he can pour test strips out onto a dry surface&#8230; not easy when you&#8217;re in the middle of a marathon.\u00a0 &#8220;Do you have any idea how many strips I waste?&#8221; he has said to me.\u00a0 &#8220;Do you know how many times my glucometer says <em>error<\/em>?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Interestingly, when it comes to sweat, the better the test strip, the more it errs.\u00a0 I love the new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abbottdiabetescare.com\/test-strip-compatibility-matrix-for-freestyle-systems.html\" target=\"_blank\">FreeStyle butterfly strips<\/a>.\u00a0 But Mike and I both agree that at the slightest hint of moisture, they fail.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mike and I can&#8217;t be the only ones sweating it.\u00a0 Anyone else?\u00a0 What do you do?\u00a0 Carry a little microfiber finger wipe?\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think it would help enough.\u00a0 I have no good answers.\u00a0 I do, however, have some product name suggestions for the makers of glucometers and test strips, should they decide to create a sweat proof glucometer system.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Abbott: <em>Sweat-FreeStyle<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Roche:\u00a0<em> Accu Sweat<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bayer:<em> Cool as a Breeze2<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">LifeScan: <em>One Touch UltraWet Mini<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>(Feel free to add to my suggestions!)<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And while I&#8217;m throwing out names, it occurs to me that &#8211;
