{"id":18455,"date":"2011-07-27T09:48:59","date_gmt":"2011-07-27T13:48:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=18455"},"modified":"2015-12-27T15:46:37","modified_gmt":"2015-12-27T20:46:37","slug":"the-case-of-the-missing-insulin-vial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=18455","title":{"rendered":"The Case of the Missing Insulin Vial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I woke up early this morning to go running. \u00a0I had a nice 10 mile run in the park and when I got home I took a shower and went to change my infusion site (after 4 days).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I went to the drawer where I keep all of my insulin pump supplies and got a new infusion set (Reservoir and Quick Set).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Diabetes-Supply-Drawer.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18457 lazyload\" title=\"Diabetes Supply Drawer\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Diabetes-Supply-Drawer.jpg\" alt=\"Insulin Pump Supply Drawer\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Diabetes-Supply-Drawer.jpg 540w, https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Diabetes-Supply-Drawer-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Then I went to the refrigerator to get my insulin. I looked for the vial I had just opened four days ago. It wasn\u2019t there. I looked all around the fridge thinking that maybe, by mistake, I&#8217;d placed it somewhere other than the &#8220;insulin section,&#8221; but it wasn\u2019t to be found. I went to my desk (where I usually switch my infusion sets) and looked to see if I&#8217;d left it there.\u00a0 Nope.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I felt like I was playing a game of hide-and-seek with my two-year-old son.\u00a0 <em>Where did insulin go?\u00a0 Is it in the fridge? Noooo.\u00a0 Is it on the desk?\u00a0 Noooo.\u00a0 Is it in the bathroom?\u00a0 Nooo.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I\u2019m usually very mechanical when I deal with my pump, doing everything exactly the same way each time so I don\u2019t make any mistakes. I get all my equipment out \u2013 reservoir, quickset, insulin and inserter. I fill the reservoir with insulin and attach the infusion set. Then I disconnect the infusion set from my body and remove the reservoir from the pump and go through the steps according to the pump&#8217;s instructions (thanks, Medtronic &#8211; very user friendly).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When I\u2019m done switching my set I put the insulin vial back in its box, put the inserter in its box, take the insulin, all of the empty wrapping and the old set to the garbage can and from there to the refrigerator.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Insulin-in-Refrigerator.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18458 lazyload\" title=\"Insulin in Refrigerator\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Insulin-in-Refrigerator.jpg\" alt=\"Boxes of Insulin in Refrigerator\" width=\"560\" height=\"389\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Insulin-in-Refrigerator.jpg 560w, https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Insulin-in-Refrigerator-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As I retraced my steps in search of the missing insulin, I realized I must have thrown it out together with the old set and the wrappers from the new one.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Insulin-and-old-infusion-set.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18459 lazyload\" title=\"Insulin Vial and old infusion set\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Insulin-and-old-infusion-set.jpg\" alt=\"Insulin Vial and old infusion set\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Insulin-and-old-infusion-set.jpg 560w, https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Insulin-and-old-infusion-set-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Luckily, I still had one vial left. I don\u2019t know how other diabetics are about their diabetes supplies but I get uneasy when I feel I\u2019m running low. I try to stockpile test strips and infusion sets.
