{"id":18785,"date":"2011-08-08T08:37:28","date_gmt":"2011-08-08T12:37:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=18785"},"modified":"2015-12-27T15:47:06","modified_gmt":"2015-12-27T20:47:06","slug":"peddling-and-protesting-a-summer-of-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=18785","title":{"rendered":"Peddling and Protesting: A Summer of Change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">My eight-year-old son, Guy, just learned to ride a bike.\u00a0 It&#8217;s been a long time coming.\u00a0 Two years ago he fell hard while trying to learn to ride.\u00a0 Nothing serious happened to him, just some scrapes, but since then he has refused to have anything to do with his bike.\u00a0 He pretended not to care when his older brother, Tom, went bike riding in the park.\u00a0 He pretended not to care when his friends rode their bikes and he trailed behind on a scooter.\u00a0 He insisted that he was never going to ride a bike because he just didn&#8217;t want to, he didn&#8217;t need to, and everything was fine in his life without riding a bike.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">This was true.\u00a0 And since I&#8217;m not usually a believer in pushing children, I didn&#8217;t tell Guy he had to learn to ride a bike.\u00a0 I expected him to come around on his own.\u00a0 But two years passed, and he didn&#8217;t.\u00a0 So I finally decided that given the &#8220;change&#8221; in the air that&#8217;s going around in Tel Aviv, it\u00a0 was time for things to change at home, too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">For those of you who don&#8217;t know, the shrinking middle class in Israel has begun to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/print-edition\/opinion\/the-israeli-protest-has-turned-into-a-revolution-1.377529\" target=\"_blank\">protest<\/a>, demanding a change in socioeconomic policies.\u00a0 To protest the lack of affordable housing, demonstrators have pitched <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/nationworld\/world\/middleeast\/la-fg-0806-israel-tent-town-pictures,0,6692783.photogallery\" target=\"_blank\">tents<\/a> around Tel Aviv.\u00a0 And Saturday night over 250,000 people marched in Tel Aviv, calling for social justice.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/author\/michael\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mike<\/a> took Tom, and Guy to the demonstration.\u00a0 Little Adam and I watched it on TV.\u00a0 (We also looked out the window at both the moon and the circling news helicopters, which Adam found very exciting.\u00a0 &#8220;Ooohhh, a big one,&#8221; he&#8217;d shout at the helicopters.\u00a0 And, &#8220;two moons!&#8221; he shouted over and over again, noticing the moon in the sky and its reflection in the window.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">Feeling invigorated by the spirit in Tel Aviv, I started to talk to Guy about bike riding. &#8220;You&#8217;ll be great at it,&#8221; I promised.\u00a0 &#8220;You just have to try.&#8221;\u00a0 I reminded Guy of my friend who is such a good cyclist she&#8217;s going to ride across all of Israel in the fall.\u00a0 &#8220;I bet she could help you learn to ride,&#8221; I said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">She did.\u00a0 In next to no time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">Guy practices riding on a shady boulevard a few blocks from our house.\u00a0 Normally, the boulevard is empty, except for a little bit of foot traffic, but now it&#8217;s lined with tents.\u00a0 As I&#8217;ve watched Guy gain balance, learn to steer, and pick up speed (and very nearly crash into a number of tents) I feel proud- proud of him, and proud of the people in Israel, who are trying to make the country a better place.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/TentCity.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18791 lazyload\" title=\"TentCity\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/TentCity.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"426\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/TentCity.jpg 570w, https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/TentCity-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">The diabetes world, too, can be a better place.\u00a0 Sadly, there are millions of us living with diabetes.\u00a0 But the voice of millions is a strong one.\u00a0 We can make the best of living with diabetes.\u00a0 It will never feel like a blessing, but it doesn&#8217;t have to feel like a curse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">Last week Manny Hernandez sent a <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/a-sweet-life-staff\/featured\/a-letter-to-president-barack-obama\/18664\/\" target=\"_blank\">letter<\/a> to President Obama &#8211; signed by over 80 diabetes advocates, researchers and doctors- requesting that he attend the United Nations High-\u00adLevel Summit on Non-\u00adCommunicable Diseases \u00a0in September to push for better health for all of those living with diabetes.\u00a0 Asking President Obama to attend a meeting is just the beginning of what we can do.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">I see the seeds of change all around me, and I believe that if Guy keeps peddling he could be the best eight-year-old cyclist in Tel Aviv.\u00a0 If Israelis keep protesting, the changes could go much further than the cost of living.\u00a0 For the first time in years, I feel hopeful about Israel&#8217;s future.\u00a0 I feel hopeful about the future of diabetes care, too.\u00a0 We need to work hard ourselves and demand better from others.\u00a0 We need to continue calling for a cure.\u00a0 Just because something seems impossible to achieve, doesn&#8217;t mean it is.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":53098,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_relevanssi_hide_post":"","_relevanssi_hide_content":"","_relevanssi_pin_for_all":"","_relevanssi_pin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_unpin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_include_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_exclude_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_no_append":"","_relevanssi_related_not_related":"","_relevanssi_related_posts":"","_relevanssi_noindex_reason":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[1501],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v22.9 (Yoast SEO v22.9) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Peddling and Protesting: A Summer of Change | ASweetLife<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"I see the seeds of change all around me.
