The one thing the stuck in my mind was the basic guideline that as long as my A1c was under 7% and I didn\u2019t have a lot of\u00a0\u00a0lows, I would live a long healthy life-\u00a0\u00a0at least as far as diabetes complications were concerned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since my diagnosis, I\u2019ve done everything I can to keep my blood sugar under control even though it&#8217;s meant making drastic changes in the way I eat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Magnolia-Bakery-Pink-Ribbon-Cupcake.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-20953 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Magnolia-Bakery-Pink-Ribbon-Cupcake.jpg\" alt=\"Magnolia Bakery Pink Ribbon Cupcake\" width=\"270\" height=\"270\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Magnolia-Bakery-Pink-Ribbon-Cupcake.jpg 270w, https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Magnolia-Bakery-Pink-Ribbon-Cupcake-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><\/a>One of the first nutritional decisions I made, the very day I was diagnosed, was that sugar was totally off limits. I understood that my body couldn&#8217;t process it, and moreover, my body didn&#8217;t need it for anything.\u00a0\u00a0I don\u2019t think anyone told me to cut out sugar entirely, but it seemed like a logical decision.\u00a0\u00a0I began to treat sugar as if I were allergic to it.\u00a0\u00a0It needed to be avoided entirely.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I also limited my carb intake, but still indulged in pizza, pasta, beer and other high carb foods from time to time. The problem was that every time I ate these foods, some of which were my favorites, my blood sugar got out of control.\u00a0\u00a0It either went too high and made me feel sluggish, or else I&#8217;d over estimate the amount of insulin I needed and end up too low. Sometimes\u00a0both happened, which would really wipe me out for hours.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A little over a year ago, after reading <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/a-sweet-life-staff\/featured\/why-i-eat-like-a-caveman\/8447\/\">Eric Devine&#8217;s article on ASweetLife<\/a>, I decided to go on <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/michael\/blogs\/food-nutrition-blogs\/going-caveman-%E2%80%93-the-paleolithic-diet-experiment\/8763\/\">the Paleo Diet<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0That meant\u00a0cutting out all grains, potatoes, rice and other high carb foods, as well as dairy. The diet was a little bit miraculous- my A1c dropped and my blood sugar control became much better.\u00a0\u00a0A few months ago I took another step in getting better control and hooked up to an insulin pump.\u00a0\u00a0Between my diet and my pump, I was doing incredibly well.\u00a0\u00a0My A1c was down to 6.3%<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Then I made a mistake.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/michael\/blogs\/exercise-blogs\/the-accidental-bolus\/19390\/\">On my birthday<\/a> I decided to indulge and have pizza for dinner.\u00a0\u00a0It was great, at least at first. After a very fun and enjoyable meal I spent a few hours fighting my blood sugar down, feeling tired and frustrated.\u00a0\u00a0The way I felt was too big of a price to pay for a meal, no matter how good it tasted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As long as I&#8217;ve had diabetes, I have struggled to keep my A1c under 7%.\u00a0\u00a0It&#8217;s not easy.\u00a0\u00a0It takes effort and tremendous discipline. The reason I bring this up is because I\u2019ve been reading a lot of posts by different D-bloggers (and on the Accu-Chek Diabetes Heroes site) about how diabetics can eat whatever they want-\u00a0cake, ice cream, cookies and what not.\u00a0Really?\u00a0\u00a0Not me.\u00a0\u00a0Not this diabetic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Wait. Don&#8217;t get angry.\u00a0\u00a0Before you think I&#8217;m about to tell you what you can or can&#8217;t eat let me say that I don&#8217;t think your diet is anyone\u2019s business. What you choose to eat and how you manage your\u00a0diabetes is all up to you, and I&#8217;m not judging you. What I want to understand is how you do it. How does someone eat a carb based diet (like most people do), eat pizza, cake and ice cream and still keep blood sugar under control?\u00a0\u00a0(Control here is defined as A1c under 7% with very few lows.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0Is it me? Am I doing diabetes all wrong?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Running Update<\/strong>: I ran my last hills this morning, finishing phase 1 &#8211; \u201cHills Training\u201d &#8211; of training towards my next marathon.
