{"id":22801,"date":"2011-12-10T10:07:21","date_gmt":"2011-12-10T15:07:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=22801"},"modified":"2015-12-27T15:42:48","modified_gmt":"2015-12-27T20:42:48","slug":"diabetes-steals-rest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=22801","title":{"rendered":"Diabetes Steals Rest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/HumanRightsDay2011Logo.png\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-22810 alignleft lazyload\" title=\"HumanRightsDay2011Logo\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/HumanRightsDay2011Logo-300x293.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"293\" \/><\/a>It&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/events\/humanrightsday\/2011\/\" target=\"_blank\">Human Rights Day<\/a>, and if you read my last <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/jessica-apple\/blogs\/news-politics\/why-dubai\/22723\/\" target=\"_blank\">post<\/a> you are aware that I am open about my belief in equality.\u00a0 As a person who has spent most of her life around family members with chronic illnesses, I&#8217;m very aware of how illness can rob you of equality (and dignity).\u00a0 I&#8217;m also very aware of how important it is not just to be free and secure, but to have good healthcare.\u00a0 That&#8217;s what I was thinking about this morning and when I skimmed over the UN&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/documents\/udhr\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Universal Declaration of Human Rights<\/a>. \u00a0I was looking for a clause about healthcare.\u00a0 But something else caught my attention.\u00a0 Article 24: <em>Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, including reasonable limitation of working hours and periodic holidays with pay<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Immediately, my mind took Article 24 out of the context of employment, and into the context of diabetes (although plenty of us have called diabetes a full-time job). \u00a0Bear with me if you find what I&#8217;m about to say is a stretch.\u00a0 I know it is, but I&#8217;m big on associations.\u00a0 I make them all the time.\u00a0 And when I read Article 24, I thought of parents of children with diabetes.\u00a0 I thought about how diabetes has robbed them of the basic human right (and need) to rest.\u00a0 Their working hours as caregivers have no limits.\u00a0 Between the constant worry and responsibility, the round the clock blood glucose checks, and everything else involved, there&#8217;s never a holiday from diabetes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mike and I have diabetes, and one of our biggest fears is that our children will develop it.\u00a0 So while the things I said above about D-parenting don&#8217;t come from first-hand knowledge, I guess you could say they come from first-hand knowledge once removed.\u00a0 I know the fears of diabetes and I know the fears of parenting.\u00a0 I really don&#8217;t know how anyone can manage the two combined.\u00a0 I pray my children will stay free of diabetes and I won&#8217;t have to know.\u00a0 Now I just want to say to all you parents of children with diabetes out there, I&#8217;m empathizing, and I&#8217;m admiring your courage, and what you do to keep your children healthy.\u00a0 I&#8217;m coming to the conclusion that you&#8217;re just above Article 24 and basic human rights because doing what you do makes you super-human.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">P.S.
