{"id":24347,"date":"2012-02-03T08:58:58","date_gmt":"2012-02-03T13:58:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=24347"},"modified":"2015-12-30T04:35:02","modified_gmt":"2015-12-30T09:35:02","slug":"fda-approves-mercks-new-type-2-diabetes-drug-janumet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=24347","title":{"rendered":"FDA Approves Merck&#8217;s New Type 2 Diabetes Drug Janumet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Merck_Logo.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-24349 lazyload\" title=\"Merck_Logo\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Merck_Logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"123\" height=\"38\" \/><\/a>The FDA has approved Merck&#8217;s (MSD) new type 2 diabetes medication, JANUMET XR (sitagliptin and metformin hydrochloride (HCl) extended-release) The new treatment combines sitagliptin, which is the active component of Januvia (sitagliptin), with extended-release metformin.\u00a0 Janumet\u00a0targets three key defects of diabetes: insulin deficiency from pancreatic beta cells, insulin resistance, and overproduction of glucose by the liver.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Janumet\u00a0is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus when treatment with both sitagliptin and extended-release metformin is appropriate.\u00a0Patients also receiving an insulin secretagogue (e.g., sulfonylurea) or insulin may require a lower dose of the insulin secretagogue or insulin to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>Janumet\u00a0should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes or for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis.\u00a0 Janumet\u00a0has not been studied in patients with a history of pancreatitis. It is unknown whether patients with a history of pancreatitis are at increased risk for the development of pancreatitis while using\u00a0 Janumet\u00a0.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Earlier this week the<a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/a-sweet-life-staff\/in-the-news\/type-2-in-the-news\/fda-approves-new-type-2-diabetes-combination-medication-jentadueto\/24201\/\"> FDA approved another type 2 diabetes combination treatment\u00a0Jentadueto<\/a> (linagliptin\/metformin hydrochloride), which combines linagliptin (the active ingredient in Tradjenta\u2122
