{"id":24464,"date":"2012-02-08T08:02:21","date_gmt":"2012-02-08T13:02:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=24464"},"modified":"2015-12-27T15:47:23","modified_gmt":"2015-12-27T20:47:23","slug":"the-anfield-cat-and-what-i-forgot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=24464","title":{"rendered":"The Anfield Cat and What I Forgot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">I am one of over 38,000 people following Anfield Cat on Twitter (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/AnfieldCat\" target=\"_blank\">@anfieldcat<\/a>).\u00a0 Anfield Cat, the cat who ran onto the field during a soccer game between Liverpool and Tottenham, is not the first tweeting cat in my life.\u00a0 For some time I&#8217;ve been following <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/CatFoodBreath\" target=\"_blank\">@CatFoodBreath<\/a>.\u00a0 And yesterday when I felt a little clump of something in my mouth and began to gag, one CatFoodBreath&#8217;s tweets proved true: &#8220;A new study determined that over 60% of meals consumed by cat owners have cat fur as an ingredient.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">If only carbs had the same effect on my mouth as cat hair. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">If only I hadn&#8217;t attempted to bake a sweet treat for my sons yesterday&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">But it was one of those days when the weather was so bad we were stuck indoors.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t the kind of bad weather you&#8217;re thinking of, not rain or sleet, but a dust storm that blew over from North Africa.\u00a0 The sky was yellow.\u00a0 Air pollution.\u00a0 I could smell the dust.\u00a0 Everyone was sneezing.\u00a0 Everything felt yucky.\u00a0 So naturally, the thing to do on such a day is to say to your sons, &#8220;Who wants chocolate chip blondies?&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">I went about making my usual eggless blondies recipe.\u00a0 (It&#8217;s eggless not because of an egg allergy, but because cracking eggs repulses me.) I had the ingredients out and after I mixed them all together something seemed wrong.\u00a0 Something seemed really wrong.\u00a0 The dough was paler than usual and the texture wasn&#8217;t right.\u00a0 Had I forgotten something?\u00a0 I went over the ingredients in my head: flour, baking powder, butter, yogurt, vanilla, chocolate chips.\u00a0 No, I hadn&#8217;t forgotten anything.\u00a0 I double checked myself and went over the ingredients again.\u00a0 I had put everything into the batter.\u00a0 Sometimes these things happen, I told myself.\u00a0 Batters don&#8217;t always look exactly the same.\u00a0 I put the blondies in the oven.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">Thirty minutes later some seriously weird looking blondies were cooling on the counter.\u00a0 Mike came home, looked at them and asked, &#8220;Did you forget one of the ingredients?&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">&#8220;No,&#8221; I said.\u00a0 &#8220;I went over everything in my head a few times.\u00a0 It&#8217;s all there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">I began to rattle off the ingredients.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">&#8220;Sugar.&#8221; Mike said.\u00a0 &#8220;Did you put in any sugar?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">&#8220;Oh my god!&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">I panicked, not because I&#8217;d ruined the blondies, but because I was afraid I had some sort of dementia.\u00a0 How could I have forgotten the sugar?\u00a0 How could I have drawn such a blank? \u00a0\u00a0It&#8217;s true I&#8217;ve sworn off eating sugar, but I didn&#8217;t know I&#8217;d also completely wiped it from my mind.\u00a0 Is this what diabetes does to you if you take it as seriously as you should? I felt as stunned and confused as that poor cat on the soccer field must have felt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">&#8220;They might still taste good,&#8221; Mike said.\u00a0 &#8220;Try one.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">The blondies were warm and buttery.\u00a0 Bland, but not bad.\u00a0 I finished one, probably exceeding my daily carb limit in five little bites.\u00a0 But they were sugar-free, and if I was already eating white flour, why not have another?\u00a0 So I did.\u00a0 And then my blood sugar shot up.\u00a0 And then I went low and shaky so I ate another blondie.\u00a0 I got into bed exhausted and feeling like crap. \u00a0I slept well until my cat pushed me off the bed just after dawn.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">When Mike came home from his early morning run I showed him the clip of Anfield Cat.\u00a0 Then I checked up on\u00a0 CatFoodBreath and found out he&#8217;s tweeting haikus.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t quite explain why, but that makes me really happy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">[youtube]http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=keOEmSCiPI8&amp;feature=related[\/youtube]\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\":17n\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mail.google.com\/mail\/images\/cleardot.gif\" alt=\"\" data-tooltip=\"Show details\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" dir=\"LTR\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":53098,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_relevanssi_hide_post":"","_relevanssi_hide_content":"","_relevanssi_pin_for_all":"","_relevanssi_pin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_unpin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_include_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_exclude_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_no_append":"","_relevanssi_related_not_related":"","_relevanssi_related_posts":"","_relevanssi_noindex_reason":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[1501],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v22.9 (Yoast SEO v22.9) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>The Anfield Cat and What I Forgot<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Is this what diabetes does to you if you take it as seriously as you should?
