{"id":26462,"date":"2012-04-16T05:10:03","date_gmt":"2012-04-16T09:10:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=26462"},"modified":"2015-12-31T05:09:09","modified_gmt":"2015-12-31T10:09:09","slug":"160-cotton-ball-squares-later-two-years-with-diabetes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=26462","title":{"rendered":"160 Cotton Ball Squares Later:  Two Years with Diabetes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I don&#8217;t know why it is that a milestone such as emptying a bag of cotton ball squares hits me harder than a date on a calendar, such as my two-year diabetes diagnosis anniversary, but that&#8217;s just the way I am. \u00a0This year, I spent my d-day completely distracted by a certain young gentleman sitting across a candle-lit table from me. \u00a0I had anticipated the day&#8211;on my calendar&#8211;for weeks, but when March 6th came along, I treated it like another typical Tuesday. \u00a0I was excited about my date after work and I focused all of my energy on our conversation. It wasn&#8217;t until the next day that I realized I hadn&#8217;t stopped to think about my diabetes diagnosis on the anniversary of my diagnosis. \u00a0Or, at least not more than I usually do. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pulling the last cotton ball square out of the package, though&#8211;that&#8217;s the kind of thing that stops me in my tracks. \u00a0Cotton ball squares? \u00a0Yes. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/emily\/blogs\/products\/160-cotton-ball-squares-later-two-years-with-diabetes\/26462\/attachment\/olympus-digital-camera-31\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-26483\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-26483 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/a-sweet-life-staff\/featured\/climbing-over-a-diabetes-diagnosis\/7666\/\" target=\"_blank\">I was diagnosed<\/a> with Type I diabetes about two weeks before my 27th birthday. \u00a0I was teaching preschool and living the bachelorette life in Austin, Texas. \u00a0I consider myself to be a relatively organized person, and I handled my diagnosis the way I handle many challenges that come my way: \u00a0with charts. \u00a0And a notebook. \u00a0And extensive notes. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/emily\/blogs\/products\/160-cotton-ball-squares-later-two-years-with-diabetes\/26462\/attachment\/olympus-digital-camera-32\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-26484\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-26484 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/notebook-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During this time, I also had no money. \u00a0Or health insurance. \u00a0My organization techniques were aimed at preserving my resources and consolidating my needs so as to be as efficient as possible with every aspect of my care. \u00a0In the <em>Supplies<\/em> section of my notebook, I sketched my first rough-draft version of a supplies tracking spreadsheet so that I could monitor how quickly I used various supplies and budget for when I would need to replenish them. \u00a0Things like test strips flew out of my hands faster than I wanted them to, but the one supply that I remember thinking, &#8220;I won&#8217;t be buying these again for a long time,&#8221; \u00a0was a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.target.com\/p\/Square-Cotton-Makeup-Pad-160-pk\/-\/A-11031115#?lnk=sc_qi_detaillink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">$2.99 bag of cotton ball squares<\/a>. \u00a0(It should be quite obvious at this point that I am an unashamed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diabetes-support.org.uk\/forum\/Blah.pl?v-print\/m-1240329192\/\" target=\"_blank\">wiper<\/a>.) \u00a0I estimated that I would be soaking up droplets of blood and using one cotton ball square every week or so. \u00a0With 160 cotton ball squares in the package, I could not even imagine where I would be after that kind of time. \u00a0As noted in my supplies chart, &#8220;two years and some&#8221; seemed like an unbelievably \u00a0distant day in the future. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/emily\/blogs\/products\/160-cotton-ball-squares-later-two-years-with-diabetes\/26462\/attachment\/olympus-digital-camera-33\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-26485\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-26485 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">That day was today. \u00a0I reached into my supplies bin, pulled out the plastic package, and then paused in disbelief as I realized this was actually the <em>last<\/em>\u00a0cotton ball square in the package. \u00a0The &#8220;two years and some&#8221; had arrived. \u00a0Thinking back on changes that have occurred in those two years is almost exhausting&#8211;a move to Seattle, a change of jobs, the entry into and discharge out of a clinical trial&#8211;and to think that this bag of cotton ball squares as been with me through it all is almost sentimental. \u00a0As silly as it seems, these cotton ball squares help me to pause and reflect on the life I&#8217;ve lived in these past two years. \u00a0The thought that resounds through my heart and soul is that I am wordlessly thankful for the people who have helped me thrive in the face of diabetes. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I&#8217;ll head to Target and grab
