{"id":26973,"date":"2012-05-03T08:59:43","date_gmt":"2012-05-03T12:59:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=26973"},"modified":"2015-12-27T15:45:35","modified_gmt":"2015-12-27T20:45:35","slug":"diabetes-friendly-food-really","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=26973","title":{"rendered":"Diabetes Friendly Food, Really?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This morning while checking out the blogs on Diabetes Daily, I noticed a link to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prevention.com\/health\/diabetes\/diabetes-prevention-healthy-diabetes-diet-foods\" target=\"_blank\">Prevention Magazine<\/a> with the title <em>14 Fantastically Healthy Foods for Diabetes<\/em>. I love Top 10 lists even when they\u2019re top 14.\u00a0 And if they have to do with food and diabetes, I\u2019m sold.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Most of the things on the list were not all that surprising to me: beans, dairy (so vague!), salmon, tuna, barley, oats, berries, dates\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Excuse my language, but WTF?\u00a0 Dates? Really?\u00a0Diabetes Friendly Food? Was the list one of those tests where you have to identify the one thing that does not belong? \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Dates-A-Diabetic-Friendly-Food-Really1.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-26979 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Dates-A-Diabetic-Friendly-Food-Really1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a>I used to run with dates in my pocket to treat lows and found that many times they were too effective.\u00a0 They brought my blood sugar up too high too fast and I never ate more than one at a time. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But since the media is known to provide nothing but accurate information about diabetes, I decided that I should double check myself just to be sure I wasn\u2019t mistaken about the effect of dates on blood sugar.\u00a0 Perhaps my own experience was not indicative of anything.\u00a0 To my mind, dates could not be considered a diabetes friendly food, unless being used to bring one back from a severe case of hypoglycemia, in which case they would make them a great companion.\u00a0 But what do I know?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here\u2019s what Prevention has to say about dates: \u201cThese chewy fruits aren&#8217;t much to look at\u2014plain and brown and a little sticky. But pop one in your mouth and you&#8217;ll be rewarded with a sweet taste and delightful texture.\u201d\u00a0 Not much to look at, but Prevention chose to use a photo of dried dates as the cover image for the story.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I agree with Prevention on this point, though, dates may look like cockroaches, but they do have a nice sweet taste, as they should since they are sweet as honey, which is why they are used all over the Middle East to produce date honey or nectar, often used to make baklava (those extremely sweet Middle Eastern cakes).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Prevention continues and with some nutritional information. They say dates have a generous supply of fiber [<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">7 dates supply 4g<\/span><\/strong>], which makes them a perfect diabetes-friendly snack. They&#8217;re also jam-packed with antioxidants\u2014with more per serving than grapes, oranges, broccoli, and peppers, according to <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">one<\/span><\/strong> study.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here\u2019s what Michael Aviad has to say about dates: \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to nutritiondata.com 1 date [dried, like in the picture on Prevention] has 18g of carb of which 2 are fiber and 16 are sugar.\u00a0 They also have 66 calories per date. \u00a0Furthermore, dates are not very rich in any other vitamins or minerals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So let\u2019s do a little math.\u00a0 If you eat 7 dates, as Prevention suggests, you\u2019ll be getting 14 grams of fiber, much more than Prevention leads you to believe, 112 grams of sugar, and 462 calories.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another interesting nutritional fact most people with diabetes would be interested in is that dates have a GI of <strong>103! <\/strong>\u00a0Table sugar has a GI of 100.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Prevention goes on to tell us how to eat the dates.\u00a0 \u201cStuff dates with pecan or walnut halves for a satisfying snack, or toss them into breads and cookies.\u201d \u00a0Yes, fellow diabetics, when choosing a way to eat your diabetes friendly dates go with the bread and cookies.
