A big hurray to Catherine Price<\/a>, whose wonderful essay<\/a> on being a type 1 diabetic appeared in yesterday\u2019s New York Times<\/em> Well Blog.\u00a0 It\u2019s a beautifully written piece, and Catherine describes life as a type 1 just right.\u00a0 If you haven\u2019t read it yet, I highly recommend doing so.\u00a0\u00a0 And speaking of reading\u2026a few days ago I received the book, The Pioneer Woman Cooks<\/em>, in the mail from its publisher, William Morrow\/Harper Collins.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t know Pioneer Woman, her name is Ree Drummond and she writes the hugely popular website thepioneerwoman.com<\/a>.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been going through Ree\u2019s book to find recipes that we diabetics can use.\u00a0 And guess what?\u00a0 It\u2019s not so easy to find them\u2026but there are some…a few…<\/p>\n

Ree is a suburban woman turned ranch wife.\u00a0 What surprised me most as I went through Ree\u2019s book was learning that despite the very big differences in our diets and lifestyles, Ree and I actually have some things in common.\u00a0 For example, Ree and I each met our husband-to-be for the first time in a smoky bar.\u00a0 Ree married and left her sushi-eating-city-life behind to become\u00a0 a rancher\u2019s wife.\u00a0 I married and left my pizza eating life behind to become a diabetic\u2019s wife (and then became one myself\u2026 is that proof of true love, or what?)<\/p>\n

Ree calls her husband Marlboro Man.\u00a0 I call mine Marathon Man.<\/p>\n

Ree and I both have websites that feature family recipes.<\/p>\n

Ree and her family love bacon.\u00a0 I have never tasted bacon, but if I did, I\u2019m sure I\u2019d give it a big thumb\u2019s up.\u00a0 (I have tasted fake bacon bits\/ smells like cat treats).<\/p>\n

Ree has a lot of cattle.\u00a0 I have a dog who is as big as a cow.\u00a0 Aw\u2026Pinky, you\u2019re such a good girl.<\/p>\n

Ree has to launder clothes splattered in mud and manure.\u00a0 It drives her insane.\u00a0 I have to launder muddy clothes too (three boys in the house plus Marathon Man who loves to go running in the rain).\u00a0 My cats sometimes poop on our beds = I go mad.<\/p>\n

Ree and I are both crazy about our kids.<\/p>\n

What I\u2019m learning from Ree is that cowboys eat a lot of carbs.\u00a0 That\u2019s definitely not good for us diabetics, especially if we’re not out ranching and working them off. \u00a0 But Ree does have some interesting meat dishes and side dishes which I hope to get permission to share with you after Thanksgiving.\u00a0 Until then, enjoy the holiday.\u00a0 I know it\u2019s hard to resist all the big meals\u2026 Do the best you can.\u00a0 If you eat more than you should, an after-dinner walk is probably a great idea.\u00a0 A happy and safe Thanksgiving to all!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
