\"Lilly<\/a>The\u00a0European Commission has given Marketing Authorization to\u00a0Jentadueto (linagliptin\/metformin hydrochloride) tablets,Boehringer Ingelheim and\u00a0Eli Lilly’s\u00a0medicine combining the DPP-4 inhibitor, linagliptin (the active ingredient in Tradjenta tablets, marketed under the trade name Trajenta in\u00a0Europe) and metformin in a single tablet taken twice daily.<\/p>\n

The European Commission\u00a0approved\u00a0Jentadueto\u00a0for use alongside diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes who are inadequately controlled on their maximally tolerated dose of metformin alone, metformin and a sulfonylurea, or those already being treated with the combination of linagliptin and metformin.\u00a0<\/span>It may be used with a sulfonylurea, as well. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Recently, the\u00a0American Diabetes Association\u00a0(ADA) and\u00a0European Association for the Study of Diabetes\u00a0(EASD) issued a joint statement that noted it may be justified to begin initial therapy with a combination of two noninsulin agents or with insulin itself for patients with a high baseline hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c or A1C) of\u00a0greater than or equal to\u00a09.0 percent.<\/p>\n

Jentadueto\u00a0was approved by the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0FDA in\u00a0January\u00a02012\u00a0as a prescription medicine used along with diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes when treatment with both linagliptin and metformin is appropriate<\/p>\n

In clinical studies, initial combination therapy with\u00a0Jentadueto\u00a0was statistically superior to metformin monotherapy and to placebo in improving A1C and fasting plasma glucose (FPG), with a similar safety and tolerability profile.
