There is no real significance in 43, it\u2019s just like 42, but older. \u00a0\u00a0And to be honest, I didn\u2019t really feel like celebrating.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Last week started with <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/jessica-apple\/blogs\/children-blogs\/back-to-school-with-a-nut-allergy\/30147\/\">Adam\u2019s diagnosis<\/a> with a cashew and pistachio allergy (and a dust mite allergy). At first I wasn\u2019t overly disturbed about the news.\u00a0 Okay, he won\u2019t eat nuts.\u00a0 Not such a big deal.\u00a0 But when I took Adam to get a haircut the next day, I realized how life altering this diagnosis actually is.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">On the way back from the haircut we stopped in one of the many bakeries to get some bread. They had little pieces of cake out for tasting and Adam wanted some.\u00a0 Without thinking, I picked up a piece of cake and started to give it to him. Suddenly I realized I needed to ask what was in it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cAre there any nuts in this cake?\u201d I asked the saleswoman.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cNo,\u201d she said. I wasn\u2019t convinced.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cAre you sure? He\u2019s allergic to\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">No nuts at all, just cake. Flour, sugar\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">I gave Adam the tiny wedge of cake and continued to The Stick House, a store that makes fancy popsicles. While I walked, still a little nervous, I thought about what would have happened had there been pistachio in that cake.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>Would I remember to use the Epipen?<\/em> <em>Would I take a cab to the ER or would I need an ambulance? Would I keep my cool and do it right or would I loose it? I\u2019ve been in tough situations before, fortunately, not with my kid.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Stick-House1.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30182 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Stick-House1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"448\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Stick-House1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Stick-House1-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">When we got to the Stick House Adam was very excited. He loves popsicles. The store has rows of popsicles in beautiful colors. Adam new exactly what he wanted. He picked up his hand and pointed, \u201cthat one\u201d. He was pointing directly at the green one, which, of course, was pistachio.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cWhich one do you want?\u201d I asked, hoping he would not say he wanted the green one.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cThe orange one,\u201d he said.\u00a0 The tangerine popsicles were sitting directly behind the pistachio.\u00a0 I tried to convince him to take something else, which looked the same, but was not next to the pistachio, but he wouldn\u2019t change his mind.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Nervously, I bought him what he wanted. (Jess, I\u2019m sure, would have carried him out kicking and screaming before allowing him to have the popsicle next to the pistachio one.) I relaxed as Adam ate and nothing more than a sticky mess came of it.\u00a0 But I realized life had changed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Much like after my type 1 diabetes diagnosis, there was a new villain in our food.
