strike-out for Jessica Apple. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I spent the weekend in Copenhagen taking part in Novo Nordisk\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/dawnstudy.com\/DAWN2\/\" target=\"_blank\">DAWN2<\/a> Global Results Meeting.\u00a0 Before I say anything else, I want to note that I was honored to be a part of the meeting and being there was a wonderful experience.\u00a0 Improving the lives of people with diabetes is my passion, and that\u2019s what DAWN is all about, so I was truly excited to be a part of the meeting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>All About DAWN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The original DAWN (Diabetes, Attitudes, Wishes, and Needs) Study was created by Novo Nordisk in 2001 because more than half of people with diabetes were not achieving good health and quality of life, despite the availability of effective medical treatments.\u00a0 Novo Nordisk partnered with the International Diabetes Federation and an international advisory panel of leading diabetes experts and patient advocates to launch DAWN, the largest study of its kind (interviews with 5,426 patients and almost 4,000 health care providers) with the aim of uncovering the psychosocial challenges faced by people with diabetes and the people helping them, and exploring new avenues for improving care. \u00a0Five goals were set based on the results of DAWN.\u00a0 You can see those <a href=\"http:\/\/dawnstudy.com\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/photo-33.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-31117 lazyload\" title=\"DAWN2 \" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/photo-33-217x300.jpg\" alt=\"DAWN2 \" width=\"217\" height=\"300\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/photo-33-217x300.jpg 217w, https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/photo-33.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/><\/a>A decade after DAWN came DAWN2, which builds on the data from DAWN, but defines new and important elements.\u00a0 In a nutshell, the DAWN2 study initiative provides new authoritative global scientific insights about unmet needs of people with diabetes, family members, healthcare professionals as well the related health care systems and policies.\u00a0 Hopefully, the study will provide a usable foundation to create solutions to the real challenges faced by people with diabetes and those who care for them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I can\u2019t share any of the DAWN2 results with you <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">yet<\/span>.\u00a0 They will be formally released by Novo Nordisk in the near future.\u00a0 So for now I\u2019ll just give you a little run down of the non-DAWN aspects of my weekend.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I had never been to Denmark and while I knew I wouldn\u2019t have time for much sightseeing, I figured that at least in the hotel, which looked modern and stylish in pictures, I\u2019d get to see some of that famed Danish design.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Strike 1<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I entered my room, put down my things, and went to quickly clean up before grabbing something to eat (I was starving!), and found that the very small bathroom sink had a very long faucet.\u00a0 The faucet stuck out so far from the wall that if you were to bend your face over the sink in order to splash water on it, you would smack your forehead and nose into the faucet.\u00a0 Then there was the toilet seat challenge \u2013 or in other words \u2013 why doesn\u2019t the toilet seat fully cover the toilet bowl?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Strike 2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/golden-toad1.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-31111 lazyload\" title=\"golden toad\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/golden-toad1-218x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"218\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Moving on now to cuisine, I\u2019ve got three words for you: smoked, pickled, and dried.\u00a0 I never like to eat in hotel restaurants, but this hotel was far from town and it was dark and getting late, so it seemed wise to stay in.\u00a0 The main hotel restaurant (situated behind a large statue of a golden toad \u2013 Hans Christian Andersen thing?) was full.\u00a0 I went to the hotel tapas bar where the menu was sparse.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/photo-34.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-31109 lazyload\" title=\"photo-34\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/photo-34-280x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>There were no veggies, my staples.\u00a0 I decided to pass on the pork cheek, smoked herring, and duck gizzard. \u00a0I ordered the bite of cheese, and the artichoke tapenade which was canned artichokes thrown into a blender with mayo. \u00a0It was a portion size so small that if it caught on and became popular, would cure the type 2 diabetes and obesity epidemic within a month.\u00a0 Since I don\u2019t eat bread (carbs), I had to dip smoked almonds (I hate smoked anything) into my pickled mayo tapenade, or eat it on a spoon like baby food.\u00a0 I went in hungry.\u00a0 I went out hungry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Strike 3<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I woke up early on Friday morning and skipped breakfast in order to have a chance to see a little of Copenhagen before the meeting began.\u00a0 I walked to a nearby metro station and tried to buy a ticket from the ticket machine.\u00a0 There should have been instructions in English, but the UK button was broken.\u00a0 I asked the woman next to me for help and it seemed I was trying to buy either a child\u2019s or a dog\u2019s ticket.\u00a0 But it actually didn\u2019t matter because when I pulled out my Danish 100 kroner bill, I couldn\u2019t find a place to stick it into the machine.\u00a0 \u201cCoins only,\u201d someone said.\u00a0 (This is the point where I got a little panicky.\u00a0 I had no coins and there was nowhere to get change.\u00a0 The hotel and metro stop were in the middle of nowhere.)\u00a0\u00a0 I noticed a slot for credit cards so I stuck mine in.\u00a0 Nothing happened.\u00a0 I asked for help again.\u00a0 \u201cIt says you need to put your pin card in,\u201d a kind Danish woman told me.\u00a0 Pin code?\u00a0 I don\u2019t have a pin code for my credit card.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So there I was, alone, freezing my ass off under a totally gray sky in the middle of nowhere, and not only was I by far the shortest person around, I was also the only one without a pin code.\u00a0 I had no choice but to retreat to the hotel, where I found the world\u2019s most expensive taxi and got a ride into town.\u00a0 I arrived in town 45 minutes later than planned.\u00a0 The wind was harsh and I was cold.\u00a0 It was early and everything was closed.\u00a0 The first thing I noticed in a store window was a bag for sale and a sign next to it that said \u201cugle.\u201d\u00a0 Then I saw a whole pig hanging in a butcher shop\u2019s window, then a place called \u201cEat Me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/P10101111.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31114 lazyload\" title=\"Pig\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/P10101111.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/P10101111.jpg 600w, https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/P10101111-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I ended my quick little walk around Copenhagen without seeing much, but at least I had found a supermarket.\u00a0 I chose some of the food I like to eat and was excited to take it back to the hotel and finally have something to fill me up.\u00a0 But when I went to pay, I took out my credit card, and I thought I was going to lose it when the cashier told me I needed a pin code.\u00a0 My cash was gone, all spent on my $50 cab ride into town. No food, again.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/P1010115.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31115 lazyload\" title=\"P1010115\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/P1010115.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/P1010115.jpg 600w, https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/P1010115-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I did succeed in getting the metro back to the hotel, washed up by carefully tilting my head to side in order to get water on my face and only splashed a few handfuls on myself and on the floor, and hurried down to the beginning of the DAWN2 meeting.\u00a0 I had failed as a tourist, but hopefully I\u2019d do better as patient representative.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As I mentioned above, the results of DAWN2 will be out soon.\u00a0 The meeting was really interesting, and I met amazing people from all over the world. \u00a0I also spoke in front everyone (big deal for me), though as soon as I opened my mouth I became intensely nervous and forgot everything I wanted to say.\u00a0 Anyway, \u00a0I mumbled my way through it, trying to put words together and form sentences, something that comes easily to me at a keyboard, but not in front of a crowd.\u00a0 As idiotic as I may have sounded, trying to buy a dog\u2019s ticket for the metro was worse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While I have a lot of thoughts on the DAWN2 Study and its results, I have to wait to share them with you.\u00a0 But here are two big takeaways I can tell you.\u00a0 First, people in Copenhagen love their herring (my great grandfather did, too.\u00a0 He also enjoyed fish eyes).\u00a0 Second, Novo Nordisk REALLY cares about us.\u00a0 The effort that has gone into their research, and their passion to make the lives of people with diabetes better couldn\u2019t be any clearer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And one more thing \u2013 on my flight home I sat next to a guy who owned body piercing stores.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I commented that he didn\u2019t have any piercings. \u00a0And then he said, suggestively, with an eyebrow raised, \u201cMaybe I do have some.\u201d\u00a0 And my stomach turned a little.\u00a0 And then it turned a little more when he stuck out his tongue to show me that he didn\u2019t have a piercing there. \u00a0He stuck out his tongue several more times as he spoke about piercing others&#8217;
