{"id":32121,"date":"2013-03-08T09:58:29","date_gmt":"2013-03-08T14:58:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=32121"},"modified":"2015-12-27T15:44:20","modified_gmt":"2015-12-27T20:44:20","slug":"alone-with-my-blood-sugar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=32121","title":{"rendered":"Alone with My Blood Sugar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\">I\u2019m one week away from the Tel Aviv marathon and me and the guys from my running group are starting to get very nervous about our up coming event.\u00a0 It\u2019s not the distance we\u2019re worried about (we\u2019ve all run marathons before) but the weather.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">On Tuesday (the 5<sup>th<\/sup>), ten days before race day, we started looking to see what kind of weather we could expect. The 10-day forecast predicted that Friday would be wormer than usual, but much better than the rest of the week, which is supposed to be hot with highs at around 90. But as the days have gone by, and the forecast has become more accurate it looks as if Friday is going to be pretty bad, with highs in the mid to high 80\u2019s.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Screen-Shot-2013-03-08-at-4.54.45-PM.png\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32125 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Screen-Shot-2013-03-08-at-4.54.45-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"217\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Screen-Shot-2013-03-08-at-4.54.45-PM.png 604w, https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Screen-Shot-2013-03-08-at-4.54.45-PM-300x108.png 300w, https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Screen-Shot-2013-03-08-at-4.54.45-PM-600x217.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"text-align: justify\">It\u2019s true that the weather may change and may turn out to be better than predicted, but after months of training none of us want to find ourselves running a bad race, slowing down trying not to dehydrate.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">So we\u2019ve started thinking about Plan B, another marathon somewhere else. Although most of the big marathons are closed by now there are some \u2013 Milan, Hamburg, Zurich\u2026 &#8211; that we may be able to get into. This is far from ideal, since it means postponing the marathon by a few weeks, but it may be better than trying to run a marathon in a heat wave.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The nice thing about all of this is that I\u2019m not alone in this and if I do decide to go abroad to run, I won\u2019t be doing it alone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">What I am alone in is my crappy blood sugar control. The last few weeks have been a little bit of a blood sugar roller-coaster ride. I\u2019ve had more morning highs, most of which felt like rebounds from nighttime lows, than I\u2019ve had since going on the pump. I don\u2019t know why this has been happening but it has been frustrating me and making me feel like a bad diabetic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">This morning when I woke up my blood sugar was 230. An hour later, before I started running \u2013 I didn\u2019t take any insulin \u2013 It was up to 265. As expected my blood sugar dropped after I started running, and after 5 miles I felt fine, not good but fine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">This has been happening so often that I\u2019ve stopped telling my running mates about it. I feel as if it\u2019s turned into an excuse, something to say so if I don\u2019t run well it isn\u2019t my fault.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Unlike the weather, which is out of my control and shared by all, my blood sugar is mine and mine alone and although friends may be understanding and sympathetic.
