Riva is a well-known diabetes advocate and has just published her third book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00BNEH6UY\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B00BNEH6UY&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=asw07-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Diabetes Do\u2019s &amp; How To\u2019s<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 She blogs about diabetes for <em>The Huffington Post<\/em>, (and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/author\/riva\/\" target=\"_blank\">here on ASweetLife<\/a>), and travels around the U.S. giving talks about diabetes. I could write a long paragraph about Riva\u2019s many achievements, but rather than that, I\u2019d like to tell you why I think she is so successful.\u00a0 Riva isn\u2019t just brains and talent.\u00a0 She puts her heart into her work and her compassion &#8211; which I experienced first-hand &#8211; also comes across thoughout her new book as she shares the actions that have kept her healthy for so many years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In <em>Diabetes Do\u2019s &amp; How-To\u2019s<\/em>, Riva has not given us just another book about living with diabetes.\u00a0 She has given us a tool to create our healthiest lives with diabetes.\u00a0 After all, being educated about diabetes is one thing.\u00a0 Implementing what you know is quite another. Reading the numerous action steps in <em>Diabetes Do\u2019s &amp; How-To\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0will prepare you to make wise decisions about food, medicine, fitness and attitude. \u00a0And then the book provides you with strategies to follow through with those decisions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/resistance_riva-1.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-32151 aligncenter lazyload\" title=\"resistance_riva-1\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/resistance_riva-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"478\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/resistance_riva-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/resistance_riva-1-300x239.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For example: In Do #34 \u201cConsider Whether An Insulin Pen, Pump, Or Continuous Glucose Monitor Is For You,\u201d\u00a0 Riva explains the options and offers practical information. \u201cAsk if a diabetes educator will put a CGM on you for a week or two and let you take a trial run,\u201d she writes. \u00a0Then she gives you a name and phone number of a certified diabetes educator who will.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Aside from the putting together great information and action-steps, Riva incorporated the cartoons of artist Haidee S. Merritt into the book. And, if those don&#8217;t bring enough smiles to your face, Riva\u2019s wit is likely to. \u00a0In Do #48, for example, Riva discusses the importance of movement. \u201cFor the girls, do your kegel exercises while in the car waiting for the light to change.\u00a0 For the guys, squeeze your glutes while in the car staring at the girl waiting for the light!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After reading Diabetes Do&#8217;s and How-To&#8217;s, I had the opportunity to talk to Riva about her book, why she wrote it, and what she hopes it will accomplish.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>What motivated you to write Diabetes Do\u2019s &amp; How-To\u2019s?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To stop people from getting needless complications and give them a blueprint for controlling their diabetes. I really hear an ache in people\u2019s voices when they ask me, \u201cCan I ever eat a piece of fried chicken again?\u201d or \u201cMy blood sugar\u2019s perfect in the morning, why is my doctor putting me on another medicine to control it?\u201d You know you can\u2019t drive a car without taking driving lessons and passing a test. Yet, here we are, managing a serious, life-threatening condition, and no one gives us an instruction booklet! I deeply felt people needed one and having lived with diabetes 41 years and working in the field the last ten, I felt I could give them that.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><strong>Why did you choose the do\/how-to structure?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It\u2019s a great way to give people just enough bite-sized, easy-to-digest information and then steps to act on it. Along with lots of \u201cHow-To\u2019s\u201d each \u201cDo\u201d has two Quick-Starts, easy actions for quick success. Understanding diabetes is important, and there\u2019s a brief overview in the back of the book, but doing, taking action, is what\u2019s going to make you healthier.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><strong>Who is the target audience for this book?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Anyone with diabetes, any type of diabetes, any age, plus caretakers, loved ones and health care providers (HCPs). I\u2019m very committed to not just helping patients do better, but also health care professionals because they impact so many. HCPs can use the book to guide patients toward healthier behaviors with practical steps patients actually take. There are also worksheets, based on the latest finding in neuroscience, to help patients change a behavior and they\u2019ll learn powerful questions to help them engage and involve patients more in their care, so that patients and providers both will benefit.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>What do you hope readers will take away?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-32149 lazyload\" title=\"Riva Greenberg\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Riva-Greenberg-245x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"172\" height=\"210\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A healthier life. I hope readers will finally feel confident that they know how to take care of themselves, and with the book\u2019s guidance, just do it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><strong>What do feel is missing from diabetes care?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I\u2019d tell you, until now, this book, the handbook for taking care of our diabetes. Then I\u2019d say time, empathy and compassion are often missing from diabetes care. Unfortunately, most general practitioners, who see the majority of diabetes patients, get a half day training on diabetes, and none for helping patients manage a chronic illness. Many patients aren\u2019t walking out of their doctor\u2019s offices with the best treatment plans. Don\u2019t think it\u2019s just up to your doctor, learn all you can and know, if you take care of your diabetes, you will have your best health.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Diabetes Do&#8217;s and How-To&#8217;s is available in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00BNEH6UY\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B00BNEH6UY&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=asw07-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">print and on Kindle<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><strong>Riva Greenberg<\/strong> is a regular contributor to ASweetLife.
