{"id":32424,"date":"2013-04-15T07:06:42","date_gmt":"2013-04-15T11:06:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=32424"},"modified":"2015-12-28T03:44:32","modified_gmt":"2015-12-28T08:44:32","slug":"i-feel-like-a-cgm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=32424","title":{"rendered":"I Feel Like a CGM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Dexcom-Sensor-and-Handset.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32432 alignleft lazyload\" title=\"Dexcom-Sensor-and-Handset\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Dexcom-Sensor-and-Handset.jpg\" alt=\"Dexcom G4 CGM - Sensor and Handset\" width=\"230\" height=\"124\" \/><\/a>My initials are JPA, not CGM.\u00a0 Right?\u00a0 But yet, more often than not, I feel like a continuous glucose monitor.\u00a0 Like anyone who lives with or has a family member with type 1 diabetes \u2013 blood glucose numbers are a regular topic of conversation. And since Mike and I both have diabetes, it\u2019s double the numbers.\u00a0 My numbers, though, don\u2019t usually go wildly out of range (thanks, LADA).\u00a0 So I\u2019m mainly talking about Mike\u2019s diabetes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Take the following as an example:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a normal home if wife asks husband, <em>What are you?<\/em>, he may be puzzled and answer any of the following: <em>a human being, a man, your husband, a Christian, Jew, or Muslim, etc.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In this diabetes home, however, when wife asks husband the same question, the answer is usually either <em>high<\/em> or <em>low<\/em>.\u00a0 Or else the response is just a number.\u00a0 It\u2019s all about the numbers these days.\u00a0 Day after day it\u2019s daytime highs followed by nighttime lows.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For weeks (months?) I\u2019ve been attributing Mike\u2019s BG issues to his marathon training, with the thought that it was all temporary and everything would return to as normal as life with diabetes can be after the marathon. \u00a0The days leading up to the marathon were extra full of <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/jessica-apple\/blogs\/travel-blogs\/milan-diabetes-style\/32369\/\" target=\"_blank\">BG frustrations<\/a>, and now here we are 8 days after the <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/michael\/blogs\/exercise-blogs\/7-not-a-charm-running-the-milano-city-marathon-with-diabetes\/32391\/\" target=\"_blank\">Milano City Marathon<\/a> and there&#8217;s no relief. \u00a0When Mike returned from his very early morning run today the first thing he told me was that he had a terrible hypo last night.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cBut you set an alarm to check,\u201d I said.\u00a0 I felt so guilty I could hardly stand it.\u00a0 Usually, I hear Mike\u2019s alarms and nudge him to check.\u00a0 I had been completely exhausted last night and thanks to Mike\u2019s mother, who invited Adam for a mid-week sleepover yesterday, I was able to sleep with the only interruption coming from the cat trying to push me off the pillow.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I hadn\u2019t heard Mike\u2019s alarm at all, but he told me that he heard it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI checked,\u201d Mike said.\u00a0 \u201cThe hypo came later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I\u2019m a lousy CGM.\u00a0 I did not sense his hypo at all.\u00a0 And our cats are not at all like those stories of <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/feature\/cat-saves-woman-with-diabetes\/\" target=\"_blank\">cats that wake their hypoglycemic owners<\/a>.\u00a0 The cats are obsessed with me.\u00a0 They wouldn\u2019t jump on Mike at night unless he began to sweat tuna.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_32433\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32433\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/P1010483.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32433  lazyload\" title=\"Sweat some tuna, Mike\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/P1010483.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/P1010483.jpg 400w, https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/P1010483-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-32433\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sweat Tuna, Mike<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Maybe I shouldn\u2019t feel like it\u2019s my responsibility to wake Mike to test his blood sugar.\u00a0 But for whatever reasons, I do feel that way.\u00a0 I hereby pledge to set my own alarms at night, not to depend on Mike\u2019s.\u00a0 I also pledge to harass Mike until he gets a real CGM.\u00a0 It\u2019s not covered by our insurance, and it\u2019s a huge expense. \u00a0But you read it here first \u2013 Mike is going to get a CGM, even if it means we both take on more work to cover the costs of buying a <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/feature\/seven-diabetes-products-to-look-for-in-2013\/\" target=\"_blank\">Navigator 2<\/a> here ($2,175 + $600 a month to use). \u00a0A better option would be getting a <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/feature\/comparing-dexcom-g4-platinum-and-medtronic-minimed\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dexcom 4 CGM<\/a> in the U.S. which, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diabetesselfmanagement.com\/Blog\/Diane-Fennell\/dexcom-g4-platinum-cgm-approved\/\" target=\"_blank\">Diabetes Self Management<\/a> costs $1,198 + $349.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":53098,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_relevanssi_hide_post":"","_relevanssi_hide_content":"","_relevanssi_pin_for_all":"","_relevanssi_pin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_unpin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_include_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_exclude_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_no_append":"","_relevanssi_related_not_related":"","_relevanssi_related_posts":"","_relevanssi_noindex_reason":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[1501],"tags":[115],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v22.9 (Yoast SEO v22.9) -
