{"id":32874,"date":"2013-05-16T13:12:37","date_gmt":"2013-05-16T17:12:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=32874"},"modified":"2015-12-27T15:44:52","modified_gmt":"2015-12-27T20:44:52","slug":"diabetes-and-marijuana-marijuana-users-could-have-better-blood-sugar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=32874","title":{"rendered":"Diabetes and Marijuana: Marijuana Users Could Have Better Blood Sugar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A study that might answer some questions about <strong>diabetes and marijuana<\/strong> appeared online \u00a0this week in the American Journal of Medicine:\u00a0 <em>The Impact of Marijuana Use on Glucose, Insulin, and Insulin Resistance among US Adults.\u00a0<\/em> The study is the first to investigate the relationship between marijuana use and fasting insulin, glucose, and insulin resistance.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_32878\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32878\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Marijuana-Cannabis_sativa_K\u00f6hler.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32878 lazyload\" title=\"Marijuana-Cannabis_sativa_(K\u00f6hler)\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Marijuana-Cannabis_sativa_K\u00f6hler.jpg\" alt=\"Marijuana-Cannabis_sativa_(K\u00f6hler)\" width=\"400\" height=\"480\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Marijuana-Cannabis_sativa_K\u00f6hler.jpg 400w, https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Marijuana-Cannabis_sativa_K\u00f6hler-250x300.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-32878\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cannabis as illustrated in K\u00f6hler&#8217;s Medicinal Plants book from 1897<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The American Journal of Medicine\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/amjmed.blogspot.co.il\" target=\"_blank\">blog<\/a> reports, \u201cParticipants who reported using marijuana in the past month had lower levels of fasting insulin and HOMA-IR [insulin resistance] and higher levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). These associations were weaker among those who reported using marijuana at least once, but not in the past thirty days, suggesting <strong>that the impact of marijuana use on insulin and insulin resistance exists during periods of recent use<\/strong>. Current users had 16% lower fasting insulin levels than participants who reported never having used marijuana in their lifetimes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Large waist circumference is linked to diabetes risk. In the current study there were also significant associations between marijuana use and smaller waist circumferences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The blog also quotes an author of the study, Elizabeth Penner, MD, MPH, who said that after subjects with a diagnosis of diabetes were excluded, the associations between marijuana use and insulin levels, HOMA-IR, waist circumference, and HDL-C were similar and remained statistically significant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>In summary, the study concludes three things about marijuana use:\u00a0 It was associated with lower levels of fasting insulin and insulin resistance, and smaller waist circumference.\u00a0 So marijuana users could have better blood sugar levels.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Does this study mean marijuana is safe for people with diabetes? \u00a0No.\u00a0 This study is not a green light to pass the dutchie. \u00a0There&#8217;s not enough evidence here to conclude that marijuana and diabetes are a good combination.\u00a0\u00a0 But the study is significant because it\u2019s a first, and it suggests that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-2324743\/Smoking-cannabis-reduce-risk-diabetes-controlling-blood-sugar.html#ixzz2TTTCljn7  \" target=\"_blank\">more research is needed<\/a> to explore future treatments using the marijuana plant&#8217;s compound active ingredient, tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>For more see <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/karmel\/blogs\/news-politics\/can-a-diabetic-smoke-marijuana\/8436\/\" target=\"_blank\">Can a Diabetic Smoke Marijuana?<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":32878,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_relevanssi_hide_post":"","_relevanssi_hide_content":"","_relevanssi_pin_for_all":"","_relevanssi_pin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_unpin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_include_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_exclude_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_no_append":"","_relevanssi_related_not_related":"","_relevanssi_related_posts":"","_relevanssi_noindex_reason":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[1501],"tags":[1295],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v22.9 (Yoast SEO v22.9) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Diabetes and Marijuana: Marijuana Users Could Have Better Blood Sugar<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"A study that might answer some questions about diabetes and marijuana appeared online this week.
