I\u2019m a little late in learning about the cronut craze, but now that I know about cronuts, I hate diabetes a little more than usual.\u00a0<\/p>\n

If you haven\u2019t been following, in May the Dominique Ansel Bakery<\/a>\u00a0in NYC created a pastry that is part croissant and part doughnut.\u00a0 The Cronut.\u00a0 The bakery produces 200 cronuts a day, and sells out immediately.\u00a0 Fans line up as much as two hours before opening in order to get a cronut.\u00a0 There is even a cronut blackmarket.\u00a0 Yep, cronut scalpers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

In this day and age of obesity and epidemic levels of diabetes, we should all be cringing about the fact that there\u2019s a new carb on the block and it\u2019s considerably more popular than spinach.\u00a0 And this carb is not just on the block anymore.\u00a0 Dunkin Donuts has launched its own version of the cronut in South Korea .\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

But, I\u2019m having a hard time getting upset about the cronut.\u00a0 It sounds like the most delicious combination of carbs and I can\u2019t help but admire the genius of Dominique Ansel.\u00a0 Out of curiosity, I visited Ansel\u2019s website and checked out his online store (boutique, I mean).\u00a0 There\u2019s a special joke in there for people with diabetes \u2013 a baked good aptly named DKA<\/a>.\u00a0 There\u2019s even an Extra Large DKA in case you want to die twice.\u00a0 The cronut, thankfully, lacks the initials that spell out death to diabetics.\u00a0 I might be reading too much into the cronut craze, but its popularity seems to represent a sort of rebellion, a broccoli backlash.\u00a0 After years of being bombarded with top ten lists exalting kale, the stress of the NYC soda ban, and those preachy Meatless Mondays folks, someone has finally given us what we want: really sweet carbs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Though I haven\u2019t tasted a cronut, I\u2019m guessing it\u2019s the best new carb since Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal. What I\u2019m saying is, although I\u2019m against the cronut in principle, if you offered me one I wouldn\u2019t say no thanks<\/em>.\u00a0 I\u2019d smile and bolus.\u00a0<\/p>\n
