What things can make dealing with diabetes an emotional issue for you and \/ or your loved one, and how do you cope?\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bittersweetdiabetes.com\/2014\/05\/diabetes-blog-week.html\" target=\"_blank\">Diabetes Blog Week<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Challah.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-36014 lazyload\" title=\"Challah\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Challah.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Challah.jpg 640w, https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Challah-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Challah-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><\/em>How many times a day do I do something really stupid, like eat?\u00a0 Look at any ordinary day of my life and you\u2019ll realize that even though EVERY time I eat I\u2019m distressed, I still keep doing it. \u00a0All the time!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It goes something like this\u2026 <em>how many carbs are in it? If I don\u2019t bolus and just take a walk after, will that do the trick?\u00a0 What if I end up with really high blood sugar?\u00a0 Is this really worth a bolus?\u00a0 Will it satisfy me or will I be hungry again in an hour?\u00a0 What if I don\u2019t eat now and try to wait until dinner?\u00a0 Then will I be so hungry that I\u2019ll overeat at dinner?\u00a0 I remember reading somewhere that even too much lettuce can cause a BG spike, though I doubt it\u2019s a very impressive one. Overeating is still definitely a bad idea.\u00a0 Wine always causes a sharp BG drop for me.\u00a0 So maybe I\u2019ll just eat and drink more. But too much wine will make me drunk and hurt my liver.\u00a0 But not enough food will make me hungry and tired.\u00a0 But high blood sugar will wreck havoc on all of my organs\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Food, in any form (even lettuce!) is an emotional issue.\u00a0 It\u2019s always against me.\u00a0 If I were the star of my own action movie, I wouldn\u2019t be battling aliens or sharks.\u00a0 It would be me against a scoop of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream the size of the moon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But then \u2013 all jokes aside &#8211; not so long ago, I got my revenge on carbs, and for a flash in time it was blissful (and delicious).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here\u2019s how:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For the most part, I\u2019m a good sleeper and I\u2019m happy to go to bed early, take a nap whenever, and sleep in.\u00a0 But one night I had insomnia.\u00a0 And not being able to sleep <em>when <\/em>I want to probably aggravates me more than not being able to eat <em>what<\/em> I want to.\u00a0 Also insomnia makes me anxious, and anxiety raises BG.\u00a0 The more I thought about it, the more doomed I felt.\u00a0 \u00a0But at some point during the restlessness, in a revelatory moment that I didn\u2019t realize was idiotic until the morning, I figured out how could get my sleep and have my carbs, too. \u00a0I would eat my way to sleep. \u00a0I would use my diabetes as a cure for insomnia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There was a fresh challah in the kitchen: thick, braided white bread with sugar.\u00a0 It\u2019s one of my favorite things to eat, and it makes my blood sugar spike faster than the speed of light.\u00a0 A couple of bites of challah could take me to 250 in no time.\u00a0 And nothing makes me sleepier than high BG, especially when it comes on fast.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I hurried out to the kitchen, reached into the brown paper bag and grabbed the challah.\u00a0 <em>I was going to eat white bread and it was going to be good for me.\u00a0 Because it would put me right to sleep. And I really needed to sleep.\u00a0 Because my BG is worse when I\u2019m tired anyway. So this was really the most sensible thing to do. \u00a0Plus, I would be using carbs to my advantage.\u00a0 Sweet and twisted (like a challah) revenge.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As expected, the challah did the trick.\u00a0 I was drowsy in no time and within a half hour I went from wide-awake to can\u2019t-keep-my-eyes-open.\u00a0 And I wasn\u2019t concerned in the least while the high BG did its thing corroding my insides, because it was a cure for insomnia. \u00a0And as I drifted into a hyperglycemic slumber I had the satisfying thought that diabetes might be fucking me over in every way, but for one stupid night, I [seemingly] used it to my advantage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":36014,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_relevanssi_hide_post":"","_relevanssi_hide_content":"","_relevanssi_pin_for_all":"","_relevanssi_pin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_unpin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_include_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_exclude_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_no_append":"","_relevanssi_related_not_related":"","_relevanssi_related_posts":"","_relevanssi_noindex_reason":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[1501],"tags":[1294],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v22.9 (Yoast SEO v22.9) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>The White Bread Cure for Insomnia: Diabetes Blog Week Day 3<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"I figured out how could get my sleep and have my carbs, too.
