{"id":37235,"date":"2014-12-01T10:24:25","date_gmt":"2014-12-01T15:24:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=37235"},"modified":"2015-12-27T15:45:09","modified_gmt":"2015-12-27T20:45:09","slug":"grateful-to-be-running-again-if-you-can-call-it-running","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=37235","title":{"rendered":"Grateful to be Running Again (if you can call it running)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Running-Shoes-Blue.jpeg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-37236 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Running-Shoes-Blue.jpeg\" alt=\"Running Shoes - Blue\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Running-Shoes-Blue.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Running-Shoes-Blue-300x200.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On November 2<sup>nd<\/sup>, the day I was supposed to run the New York Marathon, I decided to take my first run after a four-month break.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/michael\/blogs\/exercise-blogs\/taking-a-break-from-running\/36330\/\" target=\"_blank\">I stopped running on July 4<sup>th<\/sup><\/a>, after a MRI showed I had a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/medlineplus\/ency\/patientinstructions\/000551.htm\" target=\"_blank\">partially torn hamstring<\/a> (the tendon attaching the hamstring to the ischium) and a case of severe tendonitis. The doctor explained to me that because I had run on the injury for a long time (including a couple marathons), the healing process would be relatively long.<\/p>\n<p>So, I decided to stop running altogether and let my body heal.<\/p>\n<p>I did some physical therapy and some exercises to strengthen my legs, but mostly I just did nothing.<\/p>\n<p>At first, my blood sugar levels went crazy. I spent days and weeks with high blood sugar. But after a few weeks (like a month-and-a-half) I got myself on a better diet, eating less. My last A1c (6.3%) was actually better than any result since Oct. 2010.<\/p>\n<p>But sleeping late (7:00 a.m.) and getting a grip on my blood sugar, didn\u2019t make me stop wanting (needing) to run.<\/p>\n<p>After three months of rest I scheduled an appointment to get an ultrasound with a doctor, recommended by my doctor, who specializes in these kinds of injuries. The doctor told me he did no see a tear, but that I still had a serious case of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3419571\/\" target=\"_blank\">high hamstring tendinopathy<\/a> (this is a very good link if you suffer from this runner\u2019s injury). My doctor, (orthopedic surgeon), told me that I could start running again, but that I should return slowly, very slowly, and that if it hurts I should stop and take it slower.<\/p>\n<p>So, on November 2<sup>nd<\/sup>, instead of heading out to run 26.2 miles in NYC, I set out to run a very slow and short run. I ran two kilometers walking half a kilometer before, in-between and after. I was very slow, and my legs felt like they had never run before. But I was happy to be running again.<\/p>\n<p>It has been a month since I started running and I am still only run-walking. I have gotten a little faster, and can run three 2-kilometer intervals with half a kilometer of walking in between.<\/p>\n<p>A year ago I could not have imagined being in such bad shape, but now I can say that I am truly grateful to be out and running.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t worry I have not stopped wanting to run marathons but, I know that it is going to be a very long process, with ups and painful downs.<\/p>\n<p>My hope is that maybe I\u2019ll be able to run the next NYC marathon (if I can get in again).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After 4 weeks of running I have worked my way up to a weekly total of 23 km of run-walking (that\u2019s about 14 miles).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":129,"featured_media":37236,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_relevanssi_hide_post":"","_relevanssi_hide_content":"","_relevanssi_pin_for_all":"","_relevanssi_pin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_unpin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_include_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_exclude_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_no_append":"","_relevanssi_related_not_related":"","_relevanssi_related_posts":"","_relevanssi_noindex_reason":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[1501],"tags":[575],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v22.9 (Yoast SEO v22.9) -
