{"id":43946,"date":"2016-03-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-03-23T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/dr-phil-launches-type-2-diabetes-education-campaign\/"},"modified":"2016-09-14T04:53:06","modified_gmt":"2016-09-14T08:53:06","slug":"dr-phil-launches-type-2-diabetes-education-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=43946","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Phil Launches Type 2 Diabetes Education Campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Discussing the guilt and stigma that often accompanies type 2 diabetes, television personality Dr. Phil announced a new initiative to increase awareness of, and improve treatment for, the condition he\u2019s had for more than 25 years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cPeople tend to stereotype people with type 2 diabetes,\u201d Dr. Phil McGraw said in a conference call with journalists announcing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onitmovement.com\/\">ON IT Movement<\/a>. \u201cThey think it\u2019s only for people who are out of shape or overweight. But that\u2019s not true. It\u2019s not just a lazy, slovenly sort of thing. For some people, like me, it\u2019s genetic. For others it\u2019s age. If people are educated, then we\u2019ll overcome these stereotypes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dr. Phil is partnering with the pharmaceutical company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.astrazeneca.com\/\">AstraZeneca<\/a> in launching the campaign that seeks to educate the public about type 2 diabetes and \u201cempower adults living with type 2 diabetes to make a personal commitment to living a healthier life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dr. Phil, 65, is not a medical doctor, but has a doctorate in Clinical Psychology. His syndicated television show <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drphil.com\/\">Dr. Phil<\/a>, is seen by upward of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/updated-tv-ratings-dr-phil-427733\">four million viewers<\/a> each day. Dr. Phil said that by sharing his own story about living with type 2 diabetes for more than 25 years he hoped to raise awareness about the condition with his viewers, and beyond.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI don\u2019t consider myself a celebrity,\u201d Dr. Phil said. \u201cI certainly don\u2019t put myself in a different category than other type 2 diabetics. And, I don\u2019t lend my name to anything without a lot of forethought. My name is my brand. It\u2019s the name of my show. And, while I haven\u2019t kept my diabetes a secret, I\u2019m stepping up talking about it to help change the narrative about type 2 diabetes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dr. Phil said there are many psychological barriers that hinder type 2 diabetics from taking better care of themselves, or seeking better treatment for their condition. One of those barriers includes guilt from the perception that lifestyle choices may have contributed to the condition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI work out,\u201d said Dr. Phil, who attended college on a football scholarship and who plays tennis and scuba dives regularly. \u201cI\u2019m no minnow, but I\u2019m in good shape. I\u2019m the only member of my family who is not morbidly obese.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When he was one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.einstein.yu.edu\/centers\/diabetes-research\/facts-statistics\/\">more than 300 million people worldwide to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes<\/a>, Dr. Phil said he was relieved to hear it was a manageable condition. \u201cRight then,\u201d he said, \u201cI dove into finding out how to manage it. I hope I can help others do the same thing. That way when they\u2019re diagnosed I don\u2019t want them to go, \u2018Oh no.\u2019 I want them to say \u2018We have a to do list,\u2019 and then get to doing the things on that list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cType 2 diabetes can cause under-appreciated psychological challenges for patients in addition to its better-recognized physical impact,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.multivu.com\/players\/English\/7726651-on-it-movement\/\">according to Dr. Pamela Kushner<\/a>, MD, FAAFP, clinical professor of family medicine at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center, who is working on the ON IT campaign. \u201cIn my decades of experience treating patients with type 2 diabetes, I have seen how overcoming these daily challenges can help patients reach their treatment goals and live healthier lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To address these stressors, and help type 2 diabetics gain a measure of control over their condition, the ON IT campaign advised six steps. According to a<a href=\"http:\/\/Discussing%20the guilt and stigma that often accompanies type 2 diabetes, television personality Dr. Phil announced a new initiative to increase awareness of, and improve treatment for, the condition he\u2019s had for more than 25 years.\" target=\"_blank\"> news release from AstraZeneca<\/a>, the steps include:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Move forward<\/strong>. Tackle your type 2 diabetes head on \u2013 no more guilt, no more being overwhelmed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Get educated<\/strong>. Understand more about type 2 diabetes so you\u2019ll be armed with the know-how to fight back more effectively.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Build a team<\/strong>. Pull together a team \u2013 your doctor, your spouse, your kids, a trainer at a gym or your buddies at work \u2013 and lead it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Replace bad habits<\/strong>. Think about which aspects of your lifestyle need to change, and one by one, replace the bad habits with good habits.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Make a plan<\/strong>. Have goals and create a plan to get you to those goals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stick to it<\/strong>. Join the ON IT Movement to learn more about tools that can help you stick to your plan \u2013 whether it\u2019s finding healthy recipes, getting ideas for exercising or learning how to change your everyday habits.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Specifically, Dr. Phil advises each type 2 diabetic to be at the center of the team they put together to manage their diabetes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe patient is the most important member of your treatment team,\u201d he said. \u201cYour doctor is your co-captain, but as the patient you have to be proactive.\u201d He said one example of being proactive was going to doctor\u2019s appointments with a list of questions written out so the discussion is more focused on specific care options.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Moving forward, Dr. Phil said his show would feature a program about the ON IT movement in the fall.
