{"id":44029,"date":"2016-08-04T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-08-04T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/child-friendly-shot-charts\/"},"modified":"2016-09-15T04:56:20","modified_gmt":"2016-09-15T08:56:20","slug":"child-friendly-shot-charts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=44029","title":{"rendered":"Child Friendly Shot Charts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What I\u2019m about to share isn\u2019t some groundbreaking diabetes care technology, but when my little boy was first diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, these images were a tool\u2014rather, a creation\u2014that made things a little easier for my family.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the early days of our new life with diabetes we dutifully rotated my son\u2019s injection sites just as we had been taught. We tried to put the power in his hands\u2014within reason, he\u2019d get to pick where he wanted to have a shot and then he\u2019d mark it on a chart so we wouldn\u2019t hammer the same site again and again. At first our charts were crude drawings we\u2019d made of our son in various costumes\u2014a sea creature, a lion, an astronaut\u2014with six boxes in the designated injection areas (upper arm, butt, thighs). Soon, my son began making his own shot charts, mostly amorphous monsters with sharp teeth and spiky tails.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We\u2019re lucky to have many talented friends, among them Mark Wilson, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.empirewire.com\">professional cartoonist and illustrator<\/a>\u00a0whose work appears in respected newspapers and magazines. After seeing one of our son\u2019s shot charts, he came up with his own version for us, inspired by my son\u2019s choice of a cowboy Halloween costume that fall. Needless to say, my son loved it and used it devotedly until he went on an insulin pump about a year later.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/feature\/child-friendly-shot-charts\/attachment\/cowboy\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-39089\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-39089 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/cowboy.jpg\" alt=\"cowboy shot chart\" width=\"500\" height=\"723\" \/><\/a> Today our pediatric endocrinology team often gives this chart to the families of kids who are newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Sometimes it\u2019s the little things, particularly made with love by people who care, that make a difference.
