{"id":44618,"date":"2016-03-14T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-03-14T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/new-cgm-on-the-way\/"},"modified":"2016-09-24T20:45:05","modified_gmt":"2016-09-25T00:45:05","slug":"new-cgm-on-the-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=44618","title":{"rendered":"New CGM On The Way"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After the <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/michael\/blogs\/exercise-blogs\/running-the-new-york-city-marathon-with-low-blood-sugar\/\" target=\"_blank\">NYC Marathon<\/a> in November, I decided I really needed a CGM. But, as is often the case with resolutions, I didn\u2019t do anything about it until last week when I decided I was going for it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Maybe the trigger was a bunch of symptomless lows, including some during my runs, or maybe it\u2019s the fact that I am four weeks away from my next marathon. Whatever the reason, I made the decision &#8211; for real &#8211; last week, and I knew exactly which CGM I was going to get. Or so I thought.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I had my heart set on a Dexcom, and I called the distributor to make the purchase. I was excited. I hadn\u2019t felt this excited about a piece of technology since I got my iPhone 1. I felt a bit like a kid waiting for his best birthday present ever.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But then I got an unexpected call from my insurance to let me know I\u2019m due for a pump upgrade. (OMG it\u2019s been five years since I started pumping!) I say upgrade because my new pump is going to be Medtronic\u2019s MiniMed 640G.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At my diabetes clinic they suggested I buy the Medtronic CGM. \u201cIt works well with the new pump. And you will be able to use the improved low glucose suspend\u201d the nurse said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI\u2019m getting the Dexcom.\u201d I said with the confidence of a person who\u2019s made up his mind 100%.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A few days went by and the excitement kept building.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Then I got a call from <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/contributors\/dr-mariela-glandt\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Mariela Glandt<\/a>, Jessica\u2019s best friend and ASL\u2019s medical advisor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She was excited about my decision to get a Dexcom.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Then I told her I was also getting a new pump. The Medtronic MiniMed 640G.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThen why are you getting the Dexcom?\u201d she asked. \u201cI have two patients on the new Medtronic pump with the CGM and they love it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt\u2019s true that Dexcom is a little more accurate, but the new and improved low glucose suspend (officially known as SmartGuard) makes it worth it,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cOh,\u201d I said a little disappointed, \u201cSo I guess I should get the Medtronic CGM.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">My next call was to my Medtronic rep., Karen. I\u2019ve got an appointment on Tuesday to get the
