I met Mary twice. Although one time was really more of a sighting. I was walking down the street in\u00a0Manhattan when all of a sudden she appeared walking past\u00a0me. I remember\u00a0because, after all,\u00a0it\u00a0was Mary Tyler Moore.<\/p>\n

The same Mary Tyler Moore I spent my lonely high school years with\u00a0along with\u00a0Rhoda on the\u00a0groundbreaking TV sitcom, The Mary Tyler Moore show. TV Mary\u00a0was loved for her come-back-up-from-being-knocked-down, can-do spirit. The real\u00a0Mary showed much of the same spirit, for decades a JDRF advocate for type 1 diabetes (T1D). At times people said, \u201cIsn\u2019t she too old?\u201d But she widened the circle; she showed the world T1D wasn\u2019t just a disease of\u00a0children. (A lovely tribute<\/a> by T1D mom Moira McCarthy).<\/p>\n

Moore got T1D in her thirties. She lived with it for almost 50 years, along with\u00a0complications like vision loss. Yet, I\u00a0never heard her grumble.<\/p>\n

The first time I met Mary was at a book signing she was doing at Barnes &\u00a0Noble. I went. When I reached her to have her sign her book,\u00a0I was\u00a0awful cheeky. I handed her my own book,\u00a0The ABCs Of Loving Yourself With Diabetes.\u00a0\u201cPlease,\u201d I said, \u201callow me to share a gift with you. I hope you like it.\u201d She was gracious. It was a moment.<\/p>\n

Gifting my book to Ms Moore<\/p>\n

Life is moments. As you get older you realize how quickly they go.\u00a0This week,\u00a0after returning\u00a0from 18 days in Israel, I have a funeral to go to today. A\u00a0friend just lost her mother. Two nights ago my husband and I attended a memorial service for another friend\u2019s mother who passed away. I heard a long time ago, \u201cLife is not a dress rehearsal.\u201d If only we can remember in the everyday moments.<\/p>\n

Since I\u2019m sharing a flourishing approach to living with, and treating, diabetes, \u2018 among\u00a0the many articles<\/a> I\u2019ve read about Moore\u2019s death, this spoke to me.\u00a0The original lyrics to the theme song for the Mary Tyler Moore show (Love is all around) were\u00a0\u2013\u00a0\u201cHow will you make it on your own?\/This world is awfully big, and girl, this time you\u2019re all alone\u201d They were changed\u00a0to reflect\u00a0TV Mary\u2019s persona of optimism\u00a0\u2013\u00a0\u201cWho can turn the world on with her smile?\/Who can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?\u201d<\/p>\n

it also reflected Ms Moore herself. A history of two alcoholic parents, alcohol abuse herself, her son died young due to either an accident or suicide when handling a gun, she had two failed marriages, and a series of failed TV programs after she, Rhoda, Phyllis, Lou, Ted, Murray, Georgette and Sue Ann huddled as\u00a0the lights went out\u00a0at WJM Minneapolis for the last time. Mary was resilient and a fighter.<\/p>\n

With love, Mary. Thanks for making us laugh and thanks for fighting for us. Long before celebrities exposed themselves you kept a steady light shining on this unseen, misunderstood disease. You will be missed.<\/p>\n
