Hmm\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I started researching trees. It turned out I didn\u2019t even need Google because my 5 year old daughter, Maya, was a great resource. I was told \u201cTrees give us apples,\u201d \u201cSquirrels hide in them,\u201d and \u201cThey got trunks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What more did I need to know?<\/p>\n<p>Maya asked me what I like about trees. I told her I love trees because they provide shade when we play in the park, and also they are really beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>After all this tree talk, Maya showed me the tree pose that she learned in her after-school yoga class and it seemed clear that trees are pretty inspirational. But still, I wasn\u2019t sure how I wanted to connect trees to diabetes.\u00a0 And then Maya added, \u201cMommy, didn\u2019t you know trees help us breathe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ah-ha!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48945\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48945\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-48945 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/The-Diabetes-Tree_Jen-Jacobs2-800x1024.jpg\" alt=\"The Diabetes Tree by Jen Jacobs\" width=\"300\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-48945\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Diabetes Tree<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I was aware of this, but never gave it much thought, even though I walk by trees every single day. Trees give off oxygen to help us breathe. We can\u2019t live without them! And that\u2019s what Arbor Day is about \u2013 planting trees and celebrating all the good in nature. That made me think of all the brilliant diabetes supplies that people with diabetes rely on in order to stay alive. Things that we sometimes take for granted. I decided that I\u2019d create a diabetes-themed mixed-media painting of a tree.<\/p>\n<p>The final piece \u2013 The Diabetes Tree \u2013 represents the D-stuff I can\u2019t live without. My insulin. My pump. My Continuous Glucose Monitor. And so much more. All of the things that protect me. Just like trees protect the environment. I tried to make The Diabetes Tree bold and strong, despite the burden it carries.<\/p>\n<p>As I completed the artwork, Maya told me that she and her little sister, Daniela, who is 2, also wanted to make tree pictures. Daniela\u2019s scribble scrabble tree is quite cute, and Maya\u2019s tree features a rainbow.<\/p>\n<p>Happy Arbor
