{"id":49475,"date":"2018-08-16T12:23:57","date_gmt":"2018-08-16T16:23:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=49475"},"modified":"2018-08-16T12:23:57","modified_gmt":"2018-08-16T16:23:57","slug":"gif-me-a-break-annoying-diabetes-questions-edition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=49475","title":{"rendered":"Gif Me a Break:  Annoying Diabetes Questions Edition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The questions are usually well-intentioned, asked by people who care because they love you or care because they are genuinely interested in learning more about diabetes.\u00a0 Sure, sometimes there\u2019s the rogue comment from the self-anointed diabetes expert who, despite not knowing squat about diabetes, thinks they could cure you with a bowl of okra and cinnamon stew, but that kind of feedback is hopefully not the norm.<\/p>\n<p>But what do you do when the questions and comments are being served to you on the regular?\u00a0 For the moments when you feel equipped for some on-the-fly advocacy, you can engage with that person and give them a little diabetes 411.\u00a0 And that\u2019s always a good feeling.<\/p>\n<p>There can be times when you\u2019re too burnt out to stand on the diabetes advocacy platform, though.\u00a0 Some comments are just exhausting to address.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And for those times, the power of a well-placed gif can make all the difference.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cHow is your diabetes going today?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-49483 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/cat-6.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"515\" height=\"290\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Such a huge question, and how many details does the person want? \u00a0Could be a long conversation. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Diabetes is going. \u00a0It&#8217;s handled, Olivia Pope-style. \u00a0I&#8217;ve got my community, my healthcare team, and my methods of managing. \u00a0Thanks for checking in, though.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIs your diabetes under control?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-49490 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/cat-rolling-eyes.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"502\" height=\"314\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The cat&#8217;s eyes both roll in different directions because this question does not even begin to acknowledge the complicated connotation of the word &#8220;controlled.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIs that a beeper?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-49484 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/cat-7.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"503\" height=\"282\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This insulin pump? \u00a0Is totally a beeper. \u00a0I just sent a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hal0gen.com\/archive\/anarkia\/411_beeper.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">123<\/a>&#8221; to my pancreas. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI saw a Reader\u2019s Digest article about reversing diabetes using dandelion root.\u00a0 You should try that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-49485 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/cat-8.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"501\" height=\"282\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is not a food in the world that can cure diabetes. \u00a0You can shop until your fur falls off, but you still won&#8217;t find a cure. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/sorry-but-these-things-will-not-cure-diabetes\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">We&#8217;ve written about that before<\/a>. \u00a0We wish there was a quick fix to jumpstart our pancreases, but at the moment, we&#8217;re managing with good food decisions and the medication as prescribed by our medical teams. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cYou just need to avoid carbs to cure your diabetes.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-49480 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/cat-3.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"513\" height=\"485\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You &#8230; you mean the secret has been right here the whole time? \u00a0Sure, the team at A Sweet Life feels that <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/cause-of-death-american-diabetes-association-recommendations\/\">low carb diets are the best way to manage diabetes<\/a>, but low carb diets do not cure diabetes. \u00a0Nothing quite does that, yet. \u00a0 See above.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cMy mom\u2019s cat had diabetes.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-49481 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/cat-4-300x169.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"504\" height=\"284\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This cat gif is a perfect response for that question. \u00a0I mean purrfect. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cOh my god, your legs are going to be cut off!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-49482 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/cat-5.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"511\" height=\"383\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Who\u00a0<strong>says<\/strong> that to someone?! \u00a0Opening up a conversation like that is not the best way to break the ice. \u00a0&#8220;Hey, nice new car you have there DID YOU KNOW that car accidents kill 1.3 million people every year?&#8221; \u00a0Yes, we know the risks related to diabetes. \u00a0And it&#8217;s much kinder to assume that people are working to mitigate those risks instead of highlighting ways that diabetes may have an extra impact on our lives. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cAt least it\u2019s not [insert other health condition here].\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-49479 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/cat-2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>C&#8217;mon &#8230; don&#8217;t compare diseases. \u00a0It&#8217;s not a contest as to who has &#8220;suffered more&#8221; or traveled a tougher road. \u00a0Living with any kind of health condition is a specialized experience and is different for every single person. \u00a0So no, don&#8217;t tell me &#8220;at least it&#8217;s not &#8230;&#8221; or &#8220;be thankful you don&#8217;t have &#8230;&#8221; \u00a0I know what I&#8217;m grateful for, and what bugs me. \u00a0I&#8217;m doing my best to make sense of this particular issue without adding any additional psychosocial burden, thank you very much.<\/p>\n<p>And this is why we tell our personal diabetes stories &#8230;
