{"id":51442,"date":"2020-01-06T11:03:02","date_gmt":"2020-01-06T16:03:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=51442"},"modified":"2020-01-06T11:03:02","modified_gmt":"2020-01-06T16:03:02","slug":"fiasp-faster-acting-insulin-approved-for-children-with-diabetes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=51442","title":{"rendered":"Fiasp Faster-Acting Insulin Approved for Children with Diabetes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two years after the approval of Fiasp faster-acting insulin in adults, Novo Nordisk has announced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/fda-approves-fiasp-for-treatment-of-children-with-diabetes-300981601.html\">FDA approval of Fiasp<\/a> for use as a new mealtime insulin option <span lang=\"EN-GB\">for children with diabetes<\/span>.<span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span> A sort of acronym for <em>faster-acting insulin asparte<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/new-fast-acting-insulin-fiasp-against-krispy-kreme\/\">Fiasp starts working<\/a> within two minutes of injection and can even be effective in lowering blood sugar when taken up to 20 minutes after a meal. It is\u00a0the first and only fast-acting mealtime insulin injection that does not have a pre-meal dosing recommendation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Managing diabetes can be challenging for parents and caregivers given it is hard to know exactly how much or how quickly their children will eat, making mealtime insulin dosing difficult. Conventional rapid-acting insulins must be administered ahead of meals, which requires some guesswork to dose properly, and children living with diabetes may not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/fda-approves-fiasp-for-treatment-of-children-with-diabetes-300981601.html\">achieve adequate blood sugar control<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to Novo Nordisk, <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/new-fast-acting-insulin-fiasp-against-krispy-kreme\/\">Fiasp<\/a>, \u201chas its maximum effect between 1 and 3 hours after the injection and the effect lasts for 3 to 5 hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fiasp<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>is now available for use in children and adults in three different dosing options: multiple daily injections (MDI), continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion pumps and <span lang=\"EN-GB\">intravenous infusion under supervision by a healthcare professional<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><u><\/u><span lang=\"EN-GB\">In today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/fda-approves-fiasp-for-treatment-of-children-with-diabetes-300981601.html\">press release<\/a>, Todd Hobbs, vice president and U.S. chief medical officer of Novo Nordisk says, \u201cAs a parent of a son living with type 1 diabetes, I know first-hand how tough it can be to address the inevitable blood sugar spikes around mealtimes,\u201d said \u00a0\u201cChildren can be unpredictable and having the option of a fast-acting insulin that doesn\u2019t require pre-meal dosing like Fiasp<\/span>\u00a0is a welcome development for the diabetes community.\u201d<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p><u><\/u>The approval is based on the FDA&#8217;s review of data from the onset 7 clinical trial, which confirmed the efficacy and safety of
