{"id":5396,"date":"2010-02-28T12:27:51","date_gmt":"2010-02-28T17:27:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=5396"},"modified":"2015-12-27T15:45:37","modified_gmt":"2015-12-27T20:45:37","slug":"doughnuts-for-diabetes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=5396","title":{"rendered":"Doughnuts for Diabetes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I\u2019m a type 1 diabetic and I support <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jdrf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">JDRF<\/a>.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s a fantastic organization and I\u2019ve recently been talking to my husband, also type 1 diabetic who is training for the Rotterdam marathon, about whether we could use his marathon as an opportunity to raise funds for JDRF \u2013 the organization whose mission is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.\u00a0 \u00a0This morning, however, I thought I was reading <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theonion.com\/content\/index\">The Onion<\/a> as I read the article Donuts for Diabetes and saw this picture of the cute JDRF shoes logo topped with a doughnut.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/JDRF_KRISPEE_KREME_RUN.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5413 aligncenter lazyload\" style=\"border: 4px solid black; margin-top: 4px; margin-bottom: 4px;\" title=\"JDRF_KRISPEE_KREME_RUN\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/JDRF_KRISPEE_KREME_RUN.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Apparently, the second annual Krispy Kreme Challenge has just taken place.\u00a0 What is the Krispy Kreme Challenge?\u00a0 It\u2019s a diabetes event centered around doughnuts. No, that doesn\u2019t mean a bunch of people got together, ate doughnuts and tried to bring on type 2 diabetes.\u00a0 Surprisingly, it was an event which took place in order to raise money for JDRF.\u00a0 Krispy Kreme Challenge participants ran a mile or so, ate up to a dozen doughnuts, and then ran back.\u00a0 I asked my husband, a serious runner who knows as much as anyone about balancing blood sugar levels, insulin, and exercise, what he thought would happen to him if he ran a mile ate a dozen doughnuts and then ran another mile.\u00a0 \u201cI think I would die,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On that note, let\u2019s stop for a moment and look at this chart which includes nutritional data for Krispy Kreme glazed doughnuts.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Nutritional Facts <\/span><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<table style=\"height: 382px; Your daily values may be higher or lower depending on your calorie needs.<\/p>\n<p>**source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.krispykreme.com\/nutri2.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Krispy Kreme<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Yes, you did read that correctly &#8211; <strong>12 glazed doughnuts contain 2,400 calories, 264 grams of carb, and 144 grams of fat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Now factor in this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fitsugar.com\/Does-One-Mile-Equal-100-Calories-Burned-1505597\"> FitSugar<\/a>, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/article\/0,7120,s6-242-304-311-8402-0,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">Syracuse University<\/a> did a study that involved 12 men and 12 women. Their caloric burn was measured when both walking (19:00 minute miles) and running (9:30 minute miles), for a distance of 1,600 meters (about a mile). The men burned an average of 105 calories while running, and just 52 while walking; the women burned 91 calories while running and 43 walking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In summary: \u00a0A man who completed the Krispy Kreme Challenge consumed 2,400 calories.\u00a0 If he ran the course, he burned 210 of them.\u00a0 If he walked, he burned 104 calories.\u00a0 (And eek \u2013 264 grams of carb in 12 doughnuts!\u00a0 How much do you bolus to cover that?)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Annette Peery, organizer of the Krispy Kreme Challenge knows that some of us might be raising our eyebrows at her event.\u00a0 Her comment to Eye Witness News 9, \u201cA lot of people are saying, \u2019why would you be running and eating donuts for diabetes.\u2019 She explains that type 1 diabetes is not related to obesity and physical inactivity, but rather, it&#8217;s an autoimmune disorder.\u00a0 Dear Ms. Perry, type 1 diabetes might not be caused by obesity, but eating foods like doughnuts which are high in sugar, fat, and carbohydrates, are poison for all people, and especially for type 1 diabetics who are trying to avoid complications of diabetes by controlling their blood sugar and cholesterol.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It\u2019s true, type 1 diabetics *can* eat sugar, so long as they can cover themselves with the proper amount of insulin.\u00a0 But that\u2019s not an easy thing to do.\u00a0 And while almost all type 1 diabetics do sometimes eat sweets, I believe it is important to acknowledge that these foods are not good for us.\u00a0 We have to avoid falling into the \u201cequality\u201d argument which goes something like\u2026 <em>I might have diabetes, but that doesn\u2019t mean I can\u2019t eat just like everyone else.<\/em> As diabetics, we aren\u2019t equal.\u00a0 This isn\u2019t a matter of gender or race.\u00a0 This is about survival with a very serious, chronic illness.\u00a0 No diabetic of any type should be encouraged to eat doughnuts, no matter how good the cause.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finding a cure for diabetes is no simple thing.\u00a0 But keeping diabetic complications to a minimum is possible for those of us who manage \u2013overall- to keep our blood sugar levels in the target range.\u00a0 My husband and I work hard to do this.\u00a0 And the way we succeed is by avoiding foods high in sugar and carbohydrates.\u00a0 The formula is pretty simple:\u00a0 the less sugar you eat, the less insulin you need to process it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meanwhile, I\u2019m inspired.\u00a0 The Krispy Kreme challenge has led me to think of other fund raising ideas. \u00a0Tomorrow morning I think I\u2019ll approach Phillip Morris and suggest they sponsor the Marlboro Challenge to raise funds for cancer research.\u00a0 Participants will run a mile, smoke a dozen cigarettes, and then run back.\u00a0 Double the money for anyone who completes the course without coughing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">***Here&#8217;s a worthwhile challenge for you:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/a-sweet-life-staff\/featured\/from-research-guinea-pig-to-president-of-diabetes-uk-in-four-years\/2658\/\">Richard Lane<\/a>, President of Diabetes UK, and one of the first people in the UK to receive islet cell transplant, is challenging himself to walk 7.5 miles along Hadrian&#8217;s Wall to raise funds for diabetes research.\u00a0 The walk will take place on June 19, 2010.\u00a0 You can make a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diabeteschallenge.org.uk\/challenge\/richardlane\" target=\"_blank\">donation<\/a> to support Richard&#8217;s challenge.\u00a0To join Richard on his walk contact northyorks@diabetes.org.uk.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/DOCUME%7E1\/XxxxX\/LOCALS%7E1\/Temp\/moz-screenshot-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":53098,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_relevanssi_hide_post":"","_relevanssi_hide_content":"","_relevanssi_pin_for_all":"","_relevanssi_pin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_unpin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_include_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_exclude_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_no_append":"","_relevanssi_related_not_related":"","_relevanssi_related_posts":"","_relevanssi_noindex_reason":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[1501],"tags":[287],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v22.9 (Yoast SEO v22.9) - She is the diabetes correspondent for The Faster Times. In 2009 she and her husband, both type 1 diabetics, founded A Sweet Life, where she serves as editor-in-chief. Jessica loves spending time with her sons, cooking with her husband, playing with her cats, reading, biking, drinking coffee, and whenever possible, taking a nap.
