{"id":6003,"date":"2010-03-17T10:41:17","date_gmt":"2010-03-17T14:41:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=6003"},"modified":"2015-12-27T15:47:27","modified_gmt":"2015-12-27T20:47:27","slug":"symptoms-of-diabetes-type-1-and-lada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=6003","title":{"rendered":"Symptoms of Diabetes &#8211; Type 1 and LADA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">My husband, Mike,\u00a0 and I both have type 1 diabetes &#8211; sort of.\u00a0 The full story is that Mike has type 1 diabetes, and I have LADA.\u00a0 Are you confused, like so many others, about the distinctions between these forms of diabetes?\u00a0 Take a look, then, at Catherine Price&#8217;s clear-cut<a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/a-sweet-life-staff\/featured\/what-is-lada\/5999\/\"> explanation of LADA<\/a>, and how it differs from type 1.\u00a0 If it helps to put faces to the differences between type 1 and LADA, then check out the story below of Mike&#8217;s frightening diabetes onset versus my very mild one.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Mike&#8217;s\u00a0 diagnosis: Type 1:<\/strong> In November 2001, Mike began  to feel ill. The first time he mentioned it to me we were at his  cousin\u2019s wedding. I guessed he\u2019d had too much to drink and wasn\u2019t  especially worried. But days later, Mike still felt unwell. He was  unusually tired. We attributed it to his work, long-distance runs and  the sleepless nights we often had with our baby, Tom. But as weeks and  then months passed, other things felt wrong, too. Mike was constantly  thirsty. He drank orange juice not by the glass but by the liter. He  drank milkshakes and cola throughout the day. And though he\u2019d never had a  sweet-tooth before, he began to eat enormous quantities of chocolates,  cakes and biscuits \u2013 he even drank the syrup from a can of fruit  cocktail.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Yet despite his gigantic calorie intake,  Mike was losing weight. He thought that the weight loss could be the  result of long-distance running. Then his feet went numb and his vision  blurred. That\u2019s when he went to the doctor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Jessica &#8216;s diagnosis: LADA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes twice, first in 2000 and then in 2002 (with numbers higher than those in 2000).\u00a0 I was far from a typical gestational diabetes patient.\u00a0 I was young, and not overweight.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the years since then, my fasting blood sugar was always borderline high, but not high enough for any doctor to make a clear-cut diabetes diagnosis.\u00a0 I never had any symptoms of diabetes. \u00a0 &#8220;You&#8217;ll probably develop type 2 at some point,&#8221; the doctor said.\u00a0 &#8220;You should maintain a healthy diet and exercise.&#8221;\u00a0 I did.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2008, however, while pregnant with my third child, I did an oral glucose tolerance test very early in the pregnancy.\u00a0 My blood sugar levels were high and it was clearly not gestational diabetes (which is only diagnosed after week 24 of pregnancy).\u00a0 I saw an endocrinologist who tested me for autoantibodies.\u00a0 Positive.\u00a0 He tested my c-peptide level.\u00a0 Low.\u00a0 Though I had not experienced any of the classic symptoms of type 1 onset, I was well on my way to being a type 1.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jdrf.org\/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.viewPage&amp;page_id=AAC97994-110A-9BB5-F8F8AA7F9A42E6CA\" target=\"_blank\"> JDRF Adults with type 1 toolkit<\/a>, &#8220;LADA is characterized  by age, a lack of family history of type 2  diabetes, a gradual  increase in insulin requirements, positive  antibodies, and decreasing  ability to make insulin as indicated by a low  C-peptide.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">My gestational diabetes in 2000 and 2002 was &#8211;\u00a0 hindsight 20\/20 &#8211; in fact the earliest stages of LADA.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mike likes to tease me and call me a faker, since I still produce some of my own insulin.\u00a0 To that I say, if I&#8217;m a poser, then he&#8217;s a copycat, because I had LADA before he had type 1, even if we didn&#8217;t know it.\u00a0 So there.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":53098,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_relevanssi_hide_post":"","_relevanssi_hide_content":"","_relevanssi_pin_for_all":"","_relevanssi_pin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_unpin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_include_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_exclude_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_no_append":"","_relevanssi_related_not_related":"","_relevanssi_related_posts":"","_relevanssi_noindex_reason":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[1501],"tags":[681,123],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v22.9 (Yoast SEO v22.9) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Symptoms of Diabetes - Type 1 and LADA<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Mike was constantly thirsty.
