{"id":7783,"date":"2010-05-23T07:47:24","date_gmt":"2010-05-23T11:47:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=7783"},"modified":"2015-12-29T06:45:03","modified_gmt":"2015-12-29T11:45:03","slug":"cherries-healthy-and-cute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=7783","title":{"rendered":"Cherries: Healthful (and cute)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/iStock_Cherries.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7794 lazyload\" style=\"margin: 4px;\" title=\"Cherries\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/iStock_Cherries-230x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"184\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a>When it comes to cute, cherries are up there with kittens and tiny <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iwakousa.com\/id68.html\" target=\"_blank\">Japanese erasers<\/a>.\u00a0 Cherries have always been one of my favorite things to eat, and as a former champion of Ms. Pacman, I have fond memories of fleeing ghosts in hot pursuit of bouncing cherries and bonus points.<\/p>\n<p>Cherries, it turns out, have real-life bonus points too.\u00a0 A recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.med.umich.edu\/prmc\/media\/newsroom\/details.cfm?ID=1124\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> out of the University of Michigan indicates that eating one and a half servings of tart cherries could significantly boost antioxidant activity in the body.<a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/MsPacMan.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7796 lazyload\" style=\"margin: 4px;\" title=\"MsPacMan\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/MsPacMan.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"235\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Previous studies\u00a0 in animals have demonstrated that a cherry-enriched diet can lower blood cholesterol levels and reduce triglycerides, reduce body weight, and the belly fat which is associated with increased heart disease risk and type 2 diabetes.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>And here&#8217;s more good news about cherries for athletes and long distance runners like my husband, <a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/michael\/blogs\/exercise-blogs\/rotterdam-marathon-the-diabetic-version\/6870\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mike<\/a>: Research from Oregon Health &amp; Science University revealed that runners who drank cherry juice twice a day for seven days prior to and on the day of a long-distance relay had significantly less muscle pain following the race than those who drank another fruit juice beverage.\u00a0 Researchers believe cherries\u2019 post-exercise benefits are likely because of the fruit\u2019s natural anti-inflammation properties.<\/p>\n<p>Most importantly for diabetics, cherries are low in carbohydrates.\u00a0 One <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nutritiondata.com\/foods-cherries009000000000000000000.html\" target=\"_blank\">cup of fresh cherries<\/a> has 20-25 grams of carbohydrates (depending on how sweet they are).\u00a0 They also have a low glycemic index.\u00a0 Summer is peak season for cherries, so open-wide like Ms Pac-Man and\u00a0 indulge.\u00a0 Cherries make a perfect snack or dessert.\u00a0 No sweetener necessary.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When it comes to cute, cherries are up there with kittens and tiny Japanese erasers.
