{"id":8824,"date":"2010-07-07T09:46:04","date_gmt":"2010-07-07T13:46:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=8824"},"modified":"2015-12-27T15:42:00","modified_gmt":"2015-12-27T20:42:00","slug":"on-the-caveman-diet-drastic-reduction-in-insulin-requirment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/?p=8824","title":{"rendered":"On the Caveman Diet \u2013 Drastic Reduction in Insulin Requirment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Day 1<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">My first day on the Paleo diet started like every other day &#8211; with a cup of coffee. For the past 15 years my mornings have started with a cappuccino that I make myself, but today I left out the milk and replaced it with hot water (known internationally as Cafe Americano).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I ran 6.5 miles and came home to eat breakfast \u2013 a lettuce and cucumber salad topped with a can of tuna (I had lemon and olive oil on top \u2013 no salt). Not my usual breakfast, but good. I didn\u2019t really eat lunch (just an apple and a couple pieces of watermelon with 2 units of insulin).\u00a0 For diner I had a few small burgers (half a pound of meat) some grilled chicken breast and a pile of grilled veggies. I also had a couple glasses of red wine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Grilled-Veggies.jpg\" rel=\"mfp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8825 lazyload\" title=\"Grilled Veggies\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Grilled-Veggies.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Grilled-Veggies.jpg 480w, https:\/\/asweetlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Grilled-Veggies-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I took only 5 units of insulin during the day (that\u2019s at least 13 less than usual \u2013 not including my 20 units of night time Lantus) and my BS was perfectly controlled.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Day 2<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Monday morning.\u00a0 Not fun. I had to go do the usual diabetes blood tests and therefore was fasting.\u00a0 (I\u00a0 check HbA1c, cholesterol, etc, every three months.)\u00a0 Before I could go to the lab I had to take the kids to their different summer activities before going to the lab so I didn\u2019t drink my morning coffee until around 10 am.\u00a0 Serious caffeine withdrawal headache.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Once I had my caffeine, the rest of the day was great.\u00a0 My BS and was 100-125 all day long without any rapid insulin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here\u2019s what I ate:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A large omelet with a salad for breakfast<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A salad with leftover grilled chicken for lunch<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I snacked on fruit (apple, a few cherries, apricot, watermelon and a couple prickly pears) .<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Diner was another grilled meal &#8211; a pile of grilled veggies and root vegetables and a couple burgers and grilled chicken breasts. \u00a0It\u2019s a shame cavemen didn\u2019t have gas Weber grills.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I took zero units of my rapid insulin (Apidra) the whole day (I did take my Lantus at night, though \u2013 20 units).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Day 3<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tuesday.\u00a0 The morning did not go as I had planned. I woke up late and missed my window of opportunity to go running.\u00a0 That didn\u2019t get me down since my waking BS was an incredible <strong>81<\/strong>. <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What I ate:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I ate an apple for breakfast (not the best but as I said my morning did not go as planned).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Lunch was a can of tuna with olive oil and lemon (did cavemen have canned tuna?) and a large green salad.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[I went running later in the day. I felt less energetic than usual \u2013 although lighter- and I actually ran 5 miles at a good pace. It was a very hot so I don\u2019t really know if my lack of energy and feeling like I was about to vomit were connected to the diet or the heat.]\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Diner was another grilling festival of chicken, burgers and a lot of grilled veggies \u2013 zucchini, red peppers, carrots, kohlrabi, squash\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Again, a day without rapid insulin.\u00a0 I did find my BS was slightly high (160-170 after dinner, but it came down quickly, probably, thanks to my Lantus).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So after 3 days on the diet I can say that I seem to be losing weight and my BS is under better control than ever \u2013 no lows and no real highs.\u00a0 To be honest, I am shocked.\u00a0 It\u2019s true that the diet is very difficult.\u00a0 And in some ways I feel deprived and a bit hungry, too. \u00a0I enjoy eating fruit, which I don\u2019t normally do, but I really miss eating cheese, yogurt and bread.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I do feel as if my energy level is a little lower than usual but that may be a result of not sleeping more than of eating less and not snacking.
