Since his type 1 diabetes diagnosis six years ago, Oumar Diallo has dedicated his life to fighting the disease, not only by maintaining his own health, but by researching and volunteering at diabetes health clinics in the U.S. and abroad.
This summer Oumar will be volunteering with American Youth Understanding Diabetes Abroad (AYUDA) in Mali, as a “Youth Empowerment Award” recipient. He will help develop and carry out a week-long type 1 diabetes youth camp with a local diabetes organization, Santé Diabète, that partners with AYUDA. Working with local staff and youth leaders, Oumar will participate in a community outreach campaign and organize programs for underprivileged children living with diabetes. The programs are designed to promote youth leadership and motivate youths with diabetes to lead happier, healthier lives.
Oumar is asking for our support to help him raise $6,500, which will enable him to carryout this important work.
How will your donation be used?
Your donation will pay for Oumar’s flight from Denver to Bamako, housing, food and sponsorship of the local program in Mali. During the weeklong camp, participants will be provided insulin, syringes, glucose monitors, test strips, diabetes educational materials and lunch. Participants who cannot afford transportation to and from the campsite will be given a travel stipend.
