Brown sugar has been riding on the coattails of brown rice for too long. While brown rice is significantly better for you than white rice, and whole wheat bread trumps white, the same, unfortunately, cannot be said for brown and white sugar. Most of the time, brown sugar is just plain old white sugar turned brown by the reintroduction of molasses. (Molasses is normally separated and removed when sugar is created from sugarcane plants). The bottom line: sugar, no matter what its color, isn’t good for you. Stick with the whole grains, and skip the sugar altogether.
