Diabetes Dejavu

Have you ever had that déjà vu feeling?  As if you have already done what you are doing?

Last night everything was running a little late in our home. It took longer than usual to get the kids back from their judo lessons, dinner didn’t get off the ground until well past 8:00 (we usually eat at around 7:00) and the kids went to sleep later than usual for a school night.

At around 10:30 I finally got to bed and turned on the TV to try to relax a little before going to sleep. A little while later I suddenly had a weird familiar feeling that I hadn’t had for a long time. It was a kind of light headedness. So I got up and went to check my blood sugar. The moment I got on my feet I felt a little dizzy and knew I was low. I checked my blood sugar – it was 45.

I headed to the refrigerator and got myself some raisins. I also treated myself to a Reese’s peanut butter cup (one of the small individually wrapped ones). It did the trick soon and enough I was up to 61 and then 81. Although I tried not to overeat, I did.  And I woke up at 204.

It had been so long since this happened to me that I actually forgot what it felt like. I used to find myself at the refrigerator late at night stuffing myself at least once a week. But since going on the Paleo diet, hypoglycemia has become very rare. And when I do go low it’s usually in the 50’s-60’s.

Last night I couldn’t figure out what went wrong until I saw my insulin pen on the counter with my bag nearby. Then it hit me, the déjà vu feeling I had when I’d  bolused a little bit after dinner (thinking I had forgotten)… it wasn’t just one of those things. It was really a result of doing the same exact thing twice – two injections of 6 units of insulin within a half an hour of each other.
