Vitamin D Deficiency May Contribute to Diabetic Retinopathy in Children and Adolescents

A new study has found vitamin D deficiency to be associated with retinopathy in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes.

The study, published online ahead of print in Diabetes Care, set out to examine the hypothesis that vitamin D deficiency is associated with an increased prevalence of microvascular complications in young people with type 1 diabetes. The researchers found that among the 517 patients studied retinopathy prevalence was higher in cases with vitamin D deficiency versus sufficiency. Deficiency was not associated with microalbuminuria or neuropathy.
