Check Your Vitamin D Level

Vitamin D deficiency can contribute to retinopathy in young people with type 1 diabetes, according to a new study published in Diabetes Care.  If you haven’t checked your vitamin D level recently, ask your doctor to check next time you go in for an HbA1c test.

You can get vitamin D by eating oily fish and some other foods, but most of the vitamin D in our bodies doesn’t come from diet.  We get vitamin D from a chemical process that takes place when the sun’s ultraviolet light strikes our skin.  If you live in a place without a lot of sunlight, you may need to take a vitamin D supplement.
