Suspended for the Night

Last night I stayed up a little later than usual watching a soccer game on TV with Tom and Guy (my two older sons). It wasn’t a very good game and the result (a tie) was disappointing. By the time the game was over Tom and Guy were sleeping on either side of me on the couch, and Jessica was half asleep in our bed with Adam totally awake next to her.

I got the big boys to sleep in their beds and went to take a quick shower before going to sleep. After the shower I dried off quickly, put my pump back on, got ready for bed and was asleep in just a few minutes (Adam was still up).

When the alarm went off at 7:20 a.m. (yes sometimes I sleep past 5:00 a.m.) I got up to get myself and the boys ready to walk to school. I went to the bathroom removed my pump and tried to suspend it but to my surprise, it was already suspended – I had forgot to hit resume button when I attached my pump last night after my shower. I quickly got cleaned up and went to check my blood sugar. I wasn’t all that surprised when it was 288. I could feel the high blood sugar.

I find it’s hard to describe the way you feel when you’re high and it isn’t always the same (it may even be harder than describing a low), a slight headache, a little dehydrated, mouth dry. I don’t know how to put it, but most of you know what I’m talking about, I won’t try.

Feeling like an idiot, I plugged the number into the pump and let the bolus wizard do the thinking.  At about 9:45 a.m. I checked again expecting my blood sugar to be back to normal. It wasn’t, it was 227. Again I left it up to the “wiz” but after another hour, before eating for the first time, I checked again – 216. I know I should have been frustrated at this point but somehow I decided not to let it ruin my day.  I bolused again, and ate a very low carb meal. I kept on checking and blousing through the day. Around dinnertime, I was finally back to normal.

Way to not let it ruin your day… I find chasing those highs down can take a lot longer than you think. What the heck.
Also, I don’t suspend when I remove the pump anymore. I think it took me a couple nights of sleeping without insulin to realize it wasn’t worth it.

I feel your pain. And definitely know what you mean when you talk about highs feeling different each time. A post ice cream fest high feels different than an absolutely no insulin high. I forgot to unsuspend so many times when I first got my pump I had to just stop suspending it when I take a shower. I figure I would only be losing a fraction of a unit each time so I didn’t bother. And on those times I know I haven’t had insulin I bolus for the high and for the last hour of bolus that I… Read more »
