A Thanksgiving Shout-Out

It is T minus 24 hours before Thanksgiving, and my family has officially descended. I just spent the morning with my mother at Whole Foods, where I discovered that a taste for triple creme really does run in the family — the amount of cheese we just bought is absurd. My favorite part: when she walked up to the clerk behind the cheese counter and asked the clerk, point blank,  “What’s the most fattening thing you’ve got?” (This, for the record, is an excellent question to ask at a cheese counter.) I really should be finishing packing right now, but I wanted to write quickly first — I feel like I spend a lot of time on this blog complaining about diabetes, so I thought instead I’d list a couple things I’m grateful for.

– Fromage D’Affinois. That shit is good.

– the fact that my mother accompanied me to a cardio hip hop dance class this morning

– the absolutely wonderful responses I’ve gotten from my essay about diabetes that was in this week’s New York Times. I have read every single comment and email that people have sent me in response to that piece, and can’t tell you how touched and honored I am — it is so nice to feel that something I wrote might have touched that many people. Thank you, all of you, for your notes.

-A Sweet Life, for giving me a chance to write about all things diabetic. For serious — you guys are fantastic.

-My pancreas. Even after nine years, it’s still making a little bit of insulin. Keep it up, my friend.

-My husband, who has somehow agreed — I know not how this happened — to throw a co-birthday party with me this year (my birthday’s today; his is just after Christmas) that will take the form of, wait for it, a Bollywood dance class/music video. I cannot tell you how happy this makes me.

-My grandmother. This is the first birthday and Thanksgiving I’ll ever have spent without her, but while I miss her terribly, I know that not many people get to be as close to their grandmother as I was, let alone spend 30 years with them.

Whew.

I also wanted to give a public shout out to Abbott Diabetes Care, the maker of my CGM, which saw my post about my bloody thigh and personally contacted me to check in about my CGM. I’m scheduled to speak to a customer service representative next week and, while I guess it’s understandable for a company to be concerned when a customer blogs about its product making them bleed, I really appreciate the outreach.

I could go on, but I probably should pack. So instead I will simply wish you all a very, very happy Thanksgiving. I hope to blog over the weekend, but if that doesn’t happen, I’ll be back next week. In the meantime, if you or any of your friends have suggestions for diabetes-related topics for me to write about, let me know.

Enjoy!
