Insulin Pumps and Continuous Glucose Monitoring: A User’s Guide to Effective Diabetes Management
Francine Kaufman
Acclaimed pediatric endocrinologist, Dr. Francine Kaufman, who shared a story with us about her work in Haiti, has written a book on new diabetes technology. Insulin Pumps and Continuous Glucose Monitoring explains how new devices can dramatically improve care, as well as how to prepare for the physical and psychological challenges that come with these new regimens.
It provides a comprehensive medical approach to diabetes management and pump therapy with an appreciation for the real-life challenges and frustrations faced every day by people with diabetes. Dr. Kaufman’s book demonstrates just how well people with diabetes on insulin therapy can manage with insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors.
True Believers: A Novel
Kurt Andersen
Kurt Andersen’s latest novel tells the story of Karen Hollander, who has type 1 diabetes. According to the book description, Hollander is a celebrated attorney who removed herself from consideration for appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court. Her reasons have their roots in 1968—an episode she’s managed to keep secret for more than forty years.
Now, with the imminent publication of her memoir, she’s about to let the world in on that shocking secret—as soon as she can track down the answers to a few crucial last questions.
As Karen reconstructs the past and reconciles the girl she was then with the woman she is now, finally sharing pieces of her secret past with her national-security-cowboy boyfriend and Occupy-activist granddaughter, the power of memory and history and luck become clear. Sounds intriguing, but what we really want to know about is the character’s diabetes.
D-blogger Mike Hoskins who reviewed True Believers said, “Throughout the narrative, readers are treated to about 30 separate mentions of type 1 diabetes, woven into the story naturally as part and parcel of the protagonist’s life. To achieve this, Kurt transposed some of his own D-experiences and emotions into his main character, who was diagnosed as a teenager in 1967.”

Raising Teens with Diabetes: A Survival Guide for Parents
Moira McCarthy
Moira McCarthy’s daughter’s diabetes diagnosis presented her with the ultimate challenge: how to raise a healthy – but still active and happy child — and how to make a difference in the diabetes world.
Author of the best-selling book The Everything Parent’s Guide to Juvenile Diabetes and creator of the blog Despitediabetes, McCarthy is a well-known national diabetes advocate and was JDRF’s International Volunteer of the Year in 2007. She and her daughter have been guests on CNN Live, Larry King Live, FOX morning News, Good Morning America and on the front page of the New York Times. Her daughter, now a college student 500 miles away from home, is thriving. Their mantra: despite diabetes, you need to get busy living.
Her up-and-coming book, Raising Teens with Diabetes: A Survival Guide for Parents, is a no-nonsense, honest approach at not just surviving but thriving in those challenging years, from a mother who has been there.
