Diabetes is an expensive chronic condition. Personally speaking, I rely on several different kinds of medical supplies to get through a single day. Test strips, lancets, insulin, OmniPod infusion sets, and Dexcom Continuous Glucose Monitors all make up my daily toolkit. Throw glucose tablets, alcohol swabs, skin-tac wipes, and other various prescriptions into the mix, and suddenly I’m faced with staggering costs for my necessary diabetes supplies. So when it comes to something like life insurance, I think of it as a pricey luxury that I just can’t afford – even if I’m lucky enough to qualify for it.
As it turns out, I’m not alone in my thinking. A recent survey commissioned by John Hancock* found that about 50 percent of people with diabetes are worried they won’t qualify for a life insurance policy, and another 45 percent assume it’s too expensive. But these assumptions aren’t necessarily true. In fact, according to John Hancock, more than 90 percent of all the people with diabetes who sought life insurance from the company in the past 18 months qualified, with 88 percent of them receiving a standard or better rate. When I heard these statistics, I wanted to learn more about the life insurance policies offered by John Hancock.
Imagine a life insurance policy that rewards you for living a healthy lifestyle. That sounds too good to be true, right? But it does exist. Now, a new kind of life insurance called John Hancock Vitality, allows people with diabetes to pay less for their annual premiums simply by making healthy choices like eating well and staying active. John Hancock Vitality is the only life insurance solution that rewards policyholders for the smarter choices they make every day to improve their health – exercising regularly, eating well, and getting annual check-ups – things many people with diabetes are already encouraged to do.
The benefits don’t end there. Through the John Hancock Vitality program, policyholders can earn rewards including $600 in annual savings on healthy food purchases and the opportunity to earn an Apple Watch® for $25 (plus tax) by exercising regularly. They can also save as much as 15 percent on their annual life insurance premiums. Between the savings on premiums and the chance to get an insane discount on hot technology, people with diabetes who choose the John Hancock Vitality program reward their health as well as their wallets. You can find more rewards and information on JHRewardsLife.com
After two years on the market, thousands of John Hancock Vitality policyholders are earning points for making healthy choices and enjoying the many benefits of this innovative program:**
- Logging about 9,000 steps per day versus 5,900 steps for an average adult
- Walking 10.3 billion steps with their complimentary Fitbits (that’s like circling the globe over 150 times!)
With all the mileage logged by John Hancock Vitality policyholders, it sounds like the program is a total “step” in the right direction for people with diabetes! And I can say from experience that logging steps with a Fitbit makes exercise much more fun – my tracker motivates me to move more each day and helps me stay in shape. It’s wonderful to know that John Hancock Vitality could reward me in such awesome ways simply by living an active, healthy lifestyle!
